As someone intimately familiar with Mexican food and street tacos (I lived in Mexico City for 15+ yrs) it piqued my curiosity to see a Nordic take on one of my favorite foods. Hija de Sanchez is different from any taqueria in Mexico but I enjoyed their adaptations for the Nordic palate. Additionally, the chef was exceptionally kind and welcoming—he gave us recommendations, explained the dishes, and offered a level of warm hospitality rarely encountered.
I tried the veggie tacos, the esquites, rice and beans, and ice cream. The cabbage tacos I had were flavorful and nicely served. I did miss being able to add my own toppings and salsa like I would in Mexico as well as the second layer of tortillas to use as reinforcement, but the tacos here were served more ready to eat than they are in Mexico and so it’s just a different presentation of a familiar food. I do think they would not have been as tasty if I had not added guac (they needed a creaminess and acidity). I will say that their tortillas are fantastic. Even in Mexico I would have been very happy with these tortillas.
The esquites I did not love mostly because the sweet corn available here has too different a taste profile from the white corn used in Mexico, so they did not taste like esquites to me. But they were nicely presented and my companion enjoyed them. The beans and rice were beans and rice—simple and unadorned. I do think the beans could be improved by adding more flavor (e.g., guajillo, epazote) or refrying them, but locals would potentially not appreciate that.
Finally, I really enjoyed their ice cream. Nothing too Mexican about it (aside from one flavor being avocado and lime) but it was delicious ice cream and a lovely way to finish the meal. Highly recommend trying the avocado flavor topped with Tajín (powdered chiles).
This is a fun spot and a great little taste of Mexican warmth so far up North....
Read moreFantastic restaurant with lovely cocktails and great service.
We ordered a bit of everything to share and brought it back to our apartment - which was absolutely the right decision as everything we ordered was fantastic - and most was not too spicy just at a perfect level (although this will depend on your tolerance)
The churro was also great.
The highlight for me was the fish tacos - which were perhaps the best tacos I’ve ever had…. We’re perfect in every way from fish cooking to sauce ratio to veg to tortilla just a masterpiece really..
We had a margarita as we waited for the food to be ready which was very well made (and pretty strong!)
Strongly recommend to any...
Read moreThe food is fine. The options are every limited. If you are a vegetarian you pay the same for three of the exact same tacos with just veg whilst the meat combo get three different ones for the same price. I asked for cheese in one of the tacos and they charge extra even though the cost price is so much lower as it literally is some cabbage and seeds. We also asked for a gringa just without chicken so a grilled cheese essentially and they said it wasn't possible. Very overhyped and clearly not bothered about vegetarians or those with dietary requirements when adding one other option would double their...
