We were utterly disappointed. We had the 7 course menu with the matching wine menu and spent 4600 DKK (about 620 USD/EUR for two). Course 1 was three snacks - tasty, but really only snacks. And nothing else on the table apart from water. No bread, no wine. We were told that wine would only arrive with the real courses, so we could only open our Michelin experience by cheering in water. The following servings of miniscule tastings that were Course 2-7 were an accumulating frustration. Not only were courses presented by an unengaged waiter rambling the ingredients followed by an 'enjoy', but it was entirely impossible to recognize what had actually gone into the dishes. One containing crab. Well if you say so. Servings were so small that we were building up an expectation that the two final quail dishes - quail leg and quail breast - would then be the grand finale. No such luck. Although the one leg was tender and tasty, it came with one small glazed carrot and a tee spoon of compote. We felt like reliving the parody of finer French cuisine that would leave you wanting to visit the local diner on the way home. Last course, the quail breast, was served with something we never managed to figure out. It might have been tofu. I was in doubt which of the two small pieces on the plate was actually the one piece of breast, because it was entirely covered by green spices like the Santa Maria spices we oftentimes use for our grill - it came out as the art of turning a fine piece of quail into a grill sausage. With it a dark brown sauce that made the plate look very unappealing and nowhere near a grand finale. At this final course, a waiter asked not if we were happy, but 'if the food was as intended'. How were we to know, but we certainly didn't hope so. After this a scoop of sherbet with crumbles of merengue. Certainly good, but not really a Michelin star desert. The wine menu, though, we couldn't fault. Well matched, even interestingly with the third dish of green, yellow and red tomatoes and shrimps paired with a very sweet Mosel. Needless to say, we found no reason to tip. Maybe for that reason we were left to ourselves to leave the restaurant. No one at the wardrobe and no one to see us out of the door, underscoring the tepidity of the service. Formel B may be at the cheaper end of the Michelin options in Copenhagen, but still nowhere near worth the money,...
Read moreMany Michelin star restaurants offer a prix fixe menu where you may be less than thrilled on some of the dishes you will get, but Formel B offers you to select any five dishes from the menu which contains appetizers, entrees, desserts and you can select any combination. I chose one appetizer, two entrees, and two desserts while my husband had three entrees and one dessert. The entrees and desserts seemed equally sized.
We both enjoyed the salted hiramase which is a creamy clean fish that came out elegantly presented in a rose shape.
I got the roasted langoustine with pickled pumpkin, orange, and vadouvan followed by the Danish beef tartar with kale, pickled red currant, crispy sourdough and olive sauce.
The desserts were the Blood orange with pistachio and sour cream with timut pepper and the Sea buckthorn au surprise (signature dessert that looks like a hedgehog in meringue). I highly recommend both desserts. My husband got the cheese and rye bread dessert, so we got to try all the desserts.
We thoroughly enjoyed all our dishes and the service from Frida and Mikkel which was perfectly timed, never rushed or waiting too long between courses and explanations were clear and at a good volume. We had one of the first tables under the window that was slightly below street level and fortunately it was not crowded or noisy. We had a wonderful, relaxing evening.
After Mikkel refilled our second bottle of water after dessert, Frida let us know we had to ask for the check when we wanted it and we were welcome to stay as long as we wanted since we had the table for the night. We then had a nice discussion on Danish vs American health care, education, and safety at night.
We had an incredible culinary journey with excellent service from Frida and Mikkel and would definitely return when we are...
Read moreI had a couple of days in Copenhagen and thought it’d be the perfect place for my first Michelin star restaurant experience. It was a splurge for me but absolutely worth the experience for something I’ve always wanted to try. Plus the price point is quite reasonable for the level under which this restaurant operates and in comparison. You could tell each dish was well thought out and there was a consistency in the menu that made the meal flow nicely. Needless to say, the food was delicious, the reviewers and critics don’t lie! The staff is very polite and cordial. It was a slow night when I visited so as a reservation of one, I would have preferred to be seated at one of the empty tables near the window instead of being next to a wall, faced towards other diners - it felt a bit awkward. Additionally, despite being a party of one, I would have assumed the same level of attentiveness from the staff if not more, however, it felt the other way around. There were small things I noticed throughout the night, the last example being that all other tables around me were asked if they’d like to have a taxi called at the end of their night but I was never asked despite it being close to midnight when I left. All the small things were extras I wouldn’t normally expect, so I absolutely didn’t mind, I was just surprised. By the time you’ve finished all the courses, you’ll be full and with a smile...
