Quito can be a daunting place. It’s busy and loud, the traffic is horrendous. It’s often confusing and the nights can be cold. If you’re lucky, you’re able to find a calm, inviting place in which to ride out the storm that is the city, have a good meal and a drink that, whether it’s hot or not, will still warm you up. Artifice was that place for me.
My husband and I used Quito as a jumping off point for a few different trips in Ecuador and we always looked forward to getting over to Artifice for a meal and a few drinks. Christian and his team were always welcoming and open and the food was always great - they cook everything in-house. We were having a bit of altitude sickness one morning and he set us up with some coca tea that put us back on our feet and we made our way back that evening for a drink and had the best margarita we’ve had for many months - traditional and delicious. If you need a good breakfast before hopping on a bus or tackling the streets, do yourself a favor and get the pancakes. The stack is huge and they’re amazing.

What an incredible dining experience in the heart of San Marcos! The staff went above and beyond, explaining each menu item in perfect English and sharing the stories behind their authentic Ecuadorian dishes.
The cocktails are nothing short of spectacular - a smoking whisky amaretto sour that’s pure theater with preserved lemon that’s a work of art.
The atmosphere is absolutely charming, with hip music and the most adorable resident chihuahua who seems to be the true owner of the establishment. Service is warm, friendly, and professional - a rare combination that makes you feel instantly welcome. The personal touch of providing an artistic photo of your visit is a delightful surprise that sets this place apart.
Whether you’re looking for a quick coffee and cake, some inventive cocktails, or a full dinner, Artifact San Marcos delivers an unforgettable experience.

Read moreWe stopped by Artifice Cafeteria during a Saturday afternoon walk through the San Marcos neighborhood on our first trip to Quito. Cristian, the owner and barista, set us right at ease. We ordered delicious drinks — caipirinhas and canelazo and enjoyed the cool vibes of the place. There is a lot of groovy art created by the owner’s sister, and we really liked the music they played. We took home cookies and muffins baked fresh, and they were delicious the next day. If you get to the San Marcos area, stop by this gem of a place. Cristian not only takes pride in his food and drink, but he has put thought and care into the design of the cafe, and he is incredibly friendly and...
