When I looked at the site (a few months ago) I understood that the route went north, but the route went south via one of the cruise ship ports. Bit of a tourist gimmick - you pay €11 to get on a tram for 45 mins with no commentary/guide. Drinks are expensive (€7 for a beer or wine) and served in plastic cups. The tram is beautifully fitted out in brass and timber but the windows are small so not great for sight seeing - and if you're new to Helsinki you don't really know what you should be noticing. Took the train and ordered a beer. A fun experience and worth the 20 euros it cost with a travel ticket and beer.
Keep in mind that the train is limited in space and it can be difficult to get a seat togheter with others in your party.
