We had a table reservation at 10pm for dinner. However, we got our table only at 10.15pm and no apologies/explanations/complimentary offerings were made by the staff.
As my companion didn’t speak Finnish, I asked for English menu and they indeed gave it but said that the drinks menu is only in Finnish. Also, the waitress serving us didn’t speak that well English, so I made our order in Finnish to speed up the process, which resulted her to turn all her attention to me and make me translate all questions to my companion. Thus, wouldn’t necessarily recommend Alfred for international business meetings etc.
The waitress also said that the dishes are small-sized and therefore, we should order more than the usual 3-course meal. That surprised me and gave a bit of pushy feeling - as Alfred is not marketing itself as a fine dining restaurant. However, we ordered 3-course and were more than full after that.
Food was delicious and menu well-thought - so cheers to the chef! Atmosphere was very nice and chill, beautiful interior complimented it. I really think Alfred has potential to become a local gem but needs to take into account international customers and busy hours with...
Read moreThis is the fine dining place to be in Oulu. The food is innovative, great ingredient combinations and it tastes great. It isn’t an extensive menu but there is more than one thing that you want to try. The menu changes often so that there always be new dishes coming. We had the cold cod and fennel, and the stracciatella and tomato as starters followed by the white fish. The rhubarb and meringue dessert had touches of green lemon grass and rhubarb ice cream, yum. The caramel sauce on the pear pancake was delicious. The portion size is not large but you are inform in advance. This is fine dining of course. The service was exceptional and they didn’t mind explaining everything in English to us. The staff took an interest in us and then explained each dish in detail when it was brought out. It is not cheap but well worth it for a...
Read moreI had the sea bass as a cold dish and duck as a warm dish with some white wine. The sea bass dish was a little off balance, the fish itself was great, but the sides it came with were a little too fresh/crisp tasting overpowering the fairly neutral but delicious fish, 3/5 for that dish. The duck dish was perfect, everything was in balance, tasted great on their own and together, 5/5. The wine I was recommended with the duck was a good match, about the same "strength of flavor" and great taste meant that it worked well with the duck and on its own. Service was good, nothing specific to complain about but simply did not quite feel like full 5 stars. Same with the atmosphere, though if I had to choose I would say the atmosphere was a tad bit better than the service. All in all 4/5. If the sea bass dish was perfect I would...
