Being a couple of wine lovers and collectors and also always on a search for a good restaurant, we visited this cute little restaurant during our visit in Bordeaux and made a dinner reservation for our anniversary based on the Michelin Star award.
Upon arrival we were correctly given sanitizer for our hands because of the COVID but after that the whole style was way too casual for our occasion and taste. Dirty empty tables after the clients had left (never cleaned until we left), the spoons and knives were placed directly on the table with no cloth, there was actually a dog sitting right behind us with a group of people as we dinned and finally no dress code since there were people dining on Saturday night with sport shorts and snickers.
Service was polite, except from a waiter/chef that wasn’t speaking at all probably because of language barriers although at least he could say something in French as he served our dishes to seem polite. Finally poor service skills (the female waitress, although indeed very polite and kind, had no idea about where to place the wine glasses or from which side to serve).
The food was imaginative, bold and rather beautiful to look at but rarely delivered since there was no balance and too much intensity in some ingredients. Also although we order the “premium menu” with wine pairing there was no wine served with the amuse bouche and we were asked if we would like to order some extra. The wine pairing was really very good and we loved it.
Overall a medium to poor experience and not a...
Read moreMy husband and I met in Bordeaux 24 years ago. On a recent vacation trip to France it seemed only appropriate to revisit the place of origin of nearly two and a half decades of a relationship loaded with fun and adventure. Upon arriving, we asked our hotel concierge to help us pick 2 Bordeaux restaurants where he would, without hesitation, send the most fussy of his gastronomical guests. One of these was Restaurant Solena. It is not in the old city but outside the walls in a very quiet area, which still features the old balconied, limestone homes of the rue Ste Catherine, without the bustling crowd. The restaurant itself is inconspicuously hidden just inside a corner bloc of the place Tartas. It's decor is low key but classy, and the host (also our waiter) very friendly. Most importantly our concierge was right. The food was absolutely to die for. We ordered the 'menu plaisir' and were treated to a collection of the most delectable taste sensations ever. The unusual pairings and combinations of different flavours were most surprising and tantalising, and the wine recommended by the staff upon our meal selection was spectacular. Truly a gem of a place and highly...
Read moreA well deserved Michelin star for their food! We came for dinner and ordered the 5-course plats menu at €95. But i got more than my stomach can handle as it’s like gift that keeps on giving, leaving me so satiated.
The chef took me through a carefully planned gastronomical journey that married the best of sea and earth with tantalising twist of flavours. After your entrée, they serve you a slice of bread to be enjoyed with the olive oil they bottle themselves that tasted almost like you are eating a black olive to cleanse your palette before the main.
The meal is absolutely worth every penny as you will only be served with the best seasonal ingredients. For a Michelin star restaurant, the service could be a little more attentive. Ambiance is not pretentious making this place great for casual dining with friends or your loved ones.
