First night in boulogne, the restaurant we wanted was full so we checked menus outside neighbouring venues before we were enticed into la poiverie by the friendly proprietor.
We decided to try their 3 course set menu which was reasonable at 21eu.
We didn't read any reviews beforehand, otherwise we would have kept on walking!
We were seated inside, the order was placed and the starter arrived a few microwave pings later.
The fish soup was a huge portion with bread, croutons, spicy mayo and grated cheese. Neither of us liked the taste and it was tongue scaldingly hot. We added the cheese and also black pepper but the soup remained unpleasant and disappointing.
Beef steak, pepper sauce and fries were OK but nothing special.
The shark steak was watery, tasteless and very sloppy. It came with ratatouille and a small spoon of rice.
The ratatouille and the pepper sauce taste processed from a jar not like a home made recipe.
The creme brulee was nice and crunchy on top as it should be but the custard below it was grainy not smooth and silky, so possibly a packet mix.
During the meal the electric tripped several times leaving the restaurant with just candlelight. Power was quickly restored by the hosts, but the fact they didn't reassure customers or explain the issue made it look like this is a normal thing for them!
Walked past there again today and it was full, so maybe we were just unlucky.... we won't be going back though! Make your...
Read moreA simple menu that has striking resemblances with the menu of restaurant Le Swan. Coincidence? Unfortunately, the quality of the dishes was worse at La Poivrière. Friendly service, but not of the professional level we are used to in France. We have been coming to France regularly for over 25 years and eat in restaurants of all sorts and sizes. This restaurant really underperformed compared to the French standard. The formula seems designed to easily serve hungry tourists. The mussels (marinière) were mediocre and not well prepared (too little wine and way too much thyme). The white bread served with it was very dry and the fries were badly fried (mushy and soggy). My husband's meat had a lot more fat than it should have and his salad was a bit shabby. We skipped dessert. After the somewhat disappointing profiteroles experience at their neighbors across the street, I didn't expect a better profiteroles here. Very unfortunate, never experienced this before in France. Please, do something about the flies, it was...
Read moreThis is the worst restaurant I have been. I ordered the mussels as a main course cooked in white wine sauce with some herbs. When I open the mussels pot, the smell was disgusting and served with small slices of bread. I took the herb of the pot and my fingers was smelling awful eventhough I rinced them off. My partner ordered the best steak on the menu, it was full of grizzes. The profiteroles dessert was frozen on the inside. When my partner mention this to the owner he laughed. Later on we discovered better restaurants outside the...
