Le Café de Lyon — Restaurant in Chambéry

The food in this traditional bistro in Chambery is among the best we had in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. The pate en croute is in a class of its own, with layers of different textures and very fine pastry. Also excellent was a simple green salad, the carre d'agneau cooked exactly as ordered, wonderfully fresh, delicious courgettes, perfect potato puree, good bread etc. Little touches that made the whole meal a pleasure. Unfortunately, it is not a very comfortable place to eat. The music is far too loud, the lighting glares in your face and the service from some of the male staff is rather off-hand, verging on rude. We also found the wine poor - we tried the local Mondeuse and croze hermitage - both were thin and low quality. Maybe best to order by the bottle rather than the traditional 'pot' or ask for advice. Even so, inspite of the discomfort, a memorable meal because the food is so good, quality ingredients, cooked with great care and attention. The place is super awesome, very cool vibe and nice atmosphere. The service is superb, both of the staff that helped us were super nice, polite and smiling. I really enjoyed the vibe of this place. However the food was very disappointing, is it very obvious that the chef doesn’t understand the french cuisine, every dish we ordered was soaking in oil (in particular the samosas and the potatoes literally dripping oil), the taste of the tartare was disappointing old and the boeuf was not ok, it tasted like it was grilled in old fat. I had a late dinner here and will highly recommend a visit. The decor was quaint; a casual Cafe in a small village. The starter was Melted St. Marcellin with toast and greens.
