Our tour guide recommended lunch here so we stopped by and sat down. I had a bottle of water that I set on the table while we waited for our server. She came over and picked up my water bottle and started to scold me for having it on the table. I didn't understand immediately what the issue was and she continued to berate me in French rather loudly in front of the other diners. I'm in my 50s and certainly didn't intend to offend in any way by putting my bottle on the table. I put it away and after several minutes my husband and I decided to leave and lunch elsewhere. On our way out she very loudly and sarcastically said Merci and Au Revoir followed by laughing at us. For a restaurant that I'm sure caters to many foreign tourists I would've expected a bit more grace if we didn't understand that putting our water on the table would be insulting to them.
