Nice atmosphere, friendly but peculiar service, poor food, terrible prices.
The ambience is nice and the look of the place is pleasant.
We were a party of six increasing to 12 (we booked for this number) and they had a table for us. No complications.
We were offered English menus but we had to return them for French ones because the translations were poor or confusing (we're all locals who live here and speak the language despite being British originally). This seemed to confuse them massively but eventually they gave us the good menu.
The prices were high, even for France. 25cl beer for over €4, 50cl over €8 and the quality or selection was nothing spectacular for a place located so close to Belgium.
The food, however, was awful. A friend and I shared a €9 Maroilles Tarte. It was a small slice with the faintest hint of maroilles and very overcooked, black and burned on some parts. She ordered a Welsh (specialty of the North) and it was one of the worst I've had. Poorly cooked, chewy bread. I don't understand how you muck up this dish. I ordered Carbonnade Flammande and it was disgusting. It tasted like it was half sugar. On mentioning this at the end of the meal the waiter simply said "yes we have a new chef so that's that".
Ok.
My friend ordered steak tartare which was just a store bought steak hache (a poorly formed beef burger) slapped onto a plate with nothing done to it. My other friend ordered a goats cheese salad which was just a bunch of cheese on top of what looked and tasted like out of the packet salad mix from the supermarket, no different to our unappetising side salad garnishes with the other meals. Bafflingly low effort rubbish at high end...
Read moreWent with short notice to the restaurant as part of a group of 16. The service was, on the whole good, and the one main course missed was identified quickly by staff and rectified withon a reasonable time (although disappointing).
Good selection including a 'taster dish' with tastes of many dishes. Menu contains local specialities and also horse and snails. House red wine and beers very good, great evening,...
Read moreGreat place, super traditional brasserie (esaminet) serving classic dishes, really friendly and helpful staff, must visit when in Lille. We had the traditional shrimp croquettes, veal kidney in mustard sauce, the classic Welsh, all delicious. Bit out of the way from the main tourist bits of old town but short walk from the citadel so good option for lunch if spending the...
