We had an hour before our train so we researched where to get a quick bite and there appeared to be several good Turkish and middle eastern options. We hit the lottery when we settled on Restaurant Zafer. No one else was in there at first. The proprietor welcomed us to the display case of uncooked kebabs and some prepared foods and we did the best we could to understand. We settled on a kebab plate as well as a plate of meat stuffed zucchini’s. After we ordered at the counter area they brought us a giant helping of hot bread and some “Turkish sushi” I think it was called. Lettuce cups covered soft red mounds of spicy meat that MAY have been similar to a beef tartare. We squeezed lemon juice on it and it was tasty and spicy with some slight crunch to one of the ingredients. Very different but delicious. Next our plates arrived. Oh my gosh- the stuffed zucchini was phenomenal. Great flavor. Slightly spicy. All the accompaniments were delicious. Rice, yogurt sauce with eggplants, a grilled pepper and tomato mixture that was spicy and delicious. It also came with a small salad on the plate. The kebabs were equally delicious. Slightly dry, the flavor was still excellent with the wood smoke from the grille and some tanginess. There was a grilled spicy Chile that accompanied it also and the heat and flavor was perfect. We shared a baklava which was solid and sweet and capped the meal well. Maybe my favorite dining experience in Marseille when I least expected it. Oh and by the time we left the restaurant was...
Read moreMy husband and I visited Marseille this summer and stumbled upon this restaurant when we were researching where to eat. I walked in to a boy helping to set up the table and two smiling workers. It felt so welcoming and even though there was a language barrier and I didn't quite get what I intended, I think what I got was better! He was patient with me and friendly the whole time. The meat and veggies were cooked in front of me. I'm honestly not sure what we ordered, but it was a plate with rice and veggies. We had their chicken wings and chicken bites. The meat was tender and juicy and packed with flavor, the sauces a perfect compliment to the meats, veggies were grilled to perfection, and peppers spicy. We went back the next day and got more! This time, it was lamb and chicken wings again. All delicious and he added a lentil soup as a thank you for returning, which was also insanely flavorful. I wish them and their family lots of business and I hope to visit...
