This magnificent restaurant is actually underrated as #15 in Rouen, It should be in the top of France. Really, everything was superior. We were first given 4 gourmand starters: a warm shrimp and cheese chowder-like blend; mini stuffed cheese pastry; a small piece of tuna and citrus on a thin rice cake; and a mini pastry filled with tuna; Next, incredible homemade fois gras that melt in your mouth still with a pronounced goose liver flavor; certainly one of the best fois gras were have had in Paris and Rouen. Another appetizer was black ravioli stuffed with lobster and served with pieces of Maine lobster and a lobster bisque type sauce. Scrmptious! The final appetizer was thick slices of gravlax salmon that retained a bold salmon taste. All the starters and the appetizers were simply exceptional. The three main courses were also superb. The lamb was as soft and tender still retaining it's lamb flavor in an excellent rich sauce. The filet of beef was also perfectly cooked, served with a bold bordelaise sauce! hot whipped potatoes and veggies. The last entree was chicken served in two separate courses each with its different vegetables and sauces. The first included a chicken meatball presented with an elongated chicken wrap. The second, a half slide-rule shaped cut roasted piece of chicken served with its own unique sauce. Exceptional! Finally, 3 decadent, fresh desserts: a chocolate sphere filled with strawberries and sorbet; a roasted pear with chocolate and macroon-like cake; and lemon meringue...too much! The restaurant is in an ancient celler. The chef is superb. Emilie, the perky ebullent hostess/server made the whole evening delightful. By the way, this special restaurant is ridiculously inexpensive. Clearly underrated. There cannot be 15 better restaurants ......
Read moreWe came to this restaurant quite often before the pandemic. We rated it very highly and recommended it to others. We only ever had the surprise menu "incandeSense" and it used to be magic. Sadly, though, the magic has gone. Our recent visit was fully disappointing. "Shrinkflation" has taken hold, the surprise menu is only a ghost of its former self. There used to be a second main dish, and plenty of little things to finish it off. Not any more. The portions are still original and delicious, but remain tiny and the value for money just isn't there. In restaurants of this price range you would expect excellent service and organization. Alas, service was slow, bread had to be asked for and was even in short supply at the end. Two dishes on the menu were not available, which is surprising as it was in the middle of the week on a normal day. The toilets were out of (paper) towels. There used to be real ones in sufficient supply before. Just a word about the place itself: the building is still gorgeous, but the interior design shows a lot of wear and tear. The furniture has not changed in years, it is not so much shabby-chic as outright shabby. Seating positions are uncomfortable. All in all, it's a...
Read moreThis restaurant didnt live up to my expectation at all which was really a shame as it was a special occasion for us and we hoped to take away a lovely memory. The amuse bouche of salmon tartare was just too fishy and we love salmon, sushi and fish dishes! We didnt feel the salmon was fresh enough for a tartare and no other ingredients or seasonings were apparent. The mushroom bonbon was dry and underseasoned too. Te artichoke veloute wasnt pleasant with an underdone egg and my foie gras was land and a huge disappontment. We had one duck which was alright but not remarkable, quite tough and two of us had the beef which as a dish was lacking in texture and seasoning just shredded beef on a layer of mushy squash. Presentation was okay but nothing gave the wow factor or was delicious. Even the deserts weren't as good as local patisseries. I had the wine pairing and my 2nd glass was served 20 minutes before my main course and the 3rd half way trough desert and was champagne which is just lazy wine pairing. The staff were pleasant and did a good job but service was slow and plates being red hot always means a kitchen problem. For the price we should have had a better experience...
