La Chope des Puces — Restaurant in Saint-Denis

The food was really delicious but the service was a little brash. Not rude; but they slapped everything down with little regard for the guest. The music was amazing! Go there for that: and the moules. The best I’ve ever had. BUT watch out for being ripped off. We ordered a carafe of rose wine and were served a pitcher of incredibly watered down rose. I complained and it was replaced. Then, when we asked to pay, they have a round number of 120 euros which I knew to be incorrect. I challenged the manager and then they broke the bill down they came to a lower amount. Obviously they get a lot of tourists here; most of whom probably can’t speak French and so I feel they were taking advantage. But do keep an eye and call out any mistakes or issues. This is a bar on one side and a larger bar/dinner/music venue on the other side (through the back). We only went you the bar side, on a Sunday afternoon after looking around the markets. Really loved the bar, the music, the staff (family run I think). A little gem of a place to be honest!

Some things to know:

Live music - it’s a bar based on jazz music so you pay slightly more for drinks but you get musicians playing. Don’t think of the prices as the same as another bar - you’re paying also for the music!

The musicians rotate in and out so there’s great variety.

It can be very busy, then quiet, then busy again. Wait around a bit and you find a seat.

Super RUDE and RACIST!!!

I’ve been to this restaurant multiple times, and the owner has always refused to provide a simple carafe of water, insisting on selling bottled water—something that is a basic right in France. Most recently, after I asked again, we ended up ordering lemonades. During the meal, oil from my dish spilled onto my dress due to a visibly slanted table. When my friend calmly reported it, the female owner dismissively claimed no one had ever complained before. Then, she tried to remove my plate while I was still eating. When I politely said I wasn’t done, she slammed the plate back down—with used napkins on top. Things escalated when I asked for an explanation: the male owner began shouting, accused me of being aggressive, and ordered us to "get out." He even told me to shut up. On the way out, he smiled and chatted warmly with white customers while badmouthing us. We were treated with contempt—clearly because we are Asian. The racist, hostile behavior was undeniable and shocking. Deeply disrespectful and completely inappropriate.

Je suis venue plusieurs fois dans ce restaurant, et à chaque fois, la patronne a refusé de nous donner une simple carafe d’eau, exigeant l’achat d’eau en bouteille—ce qui est pourtant un droit fondamental en France. Lors de ma dernière visite, après avoir demandé, nous avons pris deux citronnades. En fin de repas, de l’huile de mon plat a débordé sur ma robe à cause d’une table visiblement bancale. Mon amie a signalé le problème calmement, mais la patronne a balayé la remarque, prétendant que personne ne s’était jamais plaint. Elle a ensuite tenté de retirer mon assiette alors que je n’avais pas fini. Quand je lui ai dit poliment que je mangeais encore, elle l’a reposée devant moi avec des serviettes sales dessus, d’un geste méprisant. Puis, le patron a commencé à crier, m’a accusée à tort d’agressivité et nous a ordonné de « dégager ». Il m’a même dit de me taire. En sortant, il riait et discutait avec les clients blancs, tout en nous dénigrant. Nous avons été traitées avec mépris—manifestement parce que nous sommes Asiatiques.
