A Tale of Two Bars

Ah, Châteaubriant! A place of grandeur, elegance, and… well, one very overwhelmed bartender who seems to believe that mixing basic drinks is a task worthy of absolute, undivided attention. My companions and I had the pleasure (or rather, displeasure) of standing there like lemons for a full 10 minutes, on 26 December 2024, while he focused entirely on his creations, blissfully unaware of our existence. When we politely asked if we might, at some point, be served, his response was, “I am too busy,” not “give me 5 minutes.” Disgruntled doesn’t quite cover it—he seemed genuinely put out by the request.

The contrast with Le Bar de L’Univers couldn’t have been more striking. There, the staff was efficient and polite, offering service with a level of professionalism that was completely missing at Châteaubriant.

If the service at Le Châteaubriant Hotel mirrors the bar’s, one might want to pack a chef’s hat for room service or risk cooking...

We arrived for a later lunch at 13:00. When I politely asked (in french, before taking a table) if we could still have lunch. The 2 waitresses looked right through me and pretended I wasn't there. A third one arrived and I repeated the question. She didn't answer and simply said 'we could sit inside'. It was a beautiful day so we wanted a free terrace table (there were plenty), but that wasn't possible. We sat down and ordered a drink while looking at the menu. Half of the options were unavailble because we were late for lunch... Finished our drinks and went elsewhere for lunch. Super unfriendly staff and badly organised place. Worst server in France. I live in France and naturally eat out often in all manner of restaurants and have experienced many levels of service. The server...he appeared to also be the manager...is clearly not cut out for the service industry. Rude and abrupt he dropped plates on the table with a bang rather than placing them on the table. He actually argued with my friend when she tried to order dessert. And the place was not busy so he can't blame his terrible attitude on being overworked. The food was fine to even good. Decor was quite nice. Do yourself a big favor and select one of the many other restaurants in St. Malo where you will likely receive much...
