Avoid if you’re unfamiliar with their rules Aachener Brauhaus was one of my favorite restaurants when I lived in Aachen for a few months in the past. I was welcomed warmly in well manners for several times when I came. I regarded it as an Aachen’s must-come, even particularly arranged my schedule to fit in a meal in this restaurant on my exhausting long trips from Switzerland.
This summer I moved back to Aachen, and chose this place to welcome my friend who travels in Germany for the first time, on his first day in Aachen and in Germany, ‘cause I thought the restaurant could leave him a nice first impression. We waited at the door for some time with no waitresses came to us. After a waitress finally came telling us to wait a moment and left, my friend sat on the bench outside of the entrance to wait. Then that waitress came and threw him two menus and left with no words. We thought the waitress was just being kind to let us looking at the menu, but soon another couple came in, the waitress immediately came to let them in. I asked the waitress why she let in later comers first and she rudely pointed to my friend saying “Because he sits here.” “If you want a table then stand there. If you sit here before I come, then you stay here.” My friend asked to leave and asked me whether he’s treated rudely because of Asian face or language. I really really feel sad that this experience made another new international student’s first impression toward Aachen be possible racism and unfriendliness.
Hope the owner can respond whether people always be set at the table noted in the photo. If people do usually be set there, then I learn this apparently worst table we were assigned was not to insult us, but I’d warn people to avoid this restaurant because of horrible seating. If this table, as understood by us, is not regarded as a suitable place to serve your guests by the owner, then I’d warn foreigners, tourists, international students and foreign experts from the universities to avoid this restaurant because of high possibility of being treated differently by the waitress. There’re so many nice restaurants in this city to explore.
I don’t know whether the another waiter who worked here left or just not in shift. Hope I can give the restaurant a second chance in the far future when the waitresses or waiters are more professional. For the owner: Don’t degrade your restaurant...
Read moreThe food was fine – nothing to complain about there. Unfortunately, the entire experience was overshadowed by the way we were treated by the staff, particularly by a woman who I believe was the manager.
Towards the end of our meal, my phone accidentally fell off the table. We were seated on the upper floor, right next to the railing, and my phone landed on another guest’s table below. It was completely unintentional. It could just as easily have been a fork, a napkin, or any other normal table item – things that shouldn’t fall from one level onto another.
I immediately went downstairs to apologize to the guests and retrieve my phone. I was quite upset myself – it was a brand-new phone, and I certainly didn’t want it falling three meters down.
Before I could even say anything, I was approached by a woman (likely the manager) in a rude and unwelcoming manner. Without acknowledging the guests at the table or me, she snatched my phone and started yelling at me as I approached. When she finally finished her outburst, she handed me the phone and treated me as if I had thrown it on purpose, possibly under the influence – which couldn’t be further from the truth. We were simply eating, calmly and respectfully. And this is, after all, a brewhouse – a place where a relaxed and friendly atmosphere should be the norm.
What’s more, I noticed that other tables upstairs had small barriers or railings installed to prevent items from falling down. Ours did not. A simple precaution like this could have avoided the entire situation.
Unfortunately, the same unpleasant tone continued when we went to pay. We tried to pay with a Dutch debit card that also has Visa functionality. The reaction was almost aggressive – we were bluntly told that Visa and Mastercard were not accepted. While it’s fine to have limited payment options, the way this was communicated was unnecessarily hostile. I eventually paid with a Maestro card, but by that point, the experience had been thoroughly spoiled.
In summary: the food is good, but the way the staff treats guests is simply unacceptable. We felt uncomfortable, unwelcome, and not treated with the basic courtesy one should expect in...
Read moreAlarm! Especially you are international! If you want to feel unwelcome and rudely treated, you come to the right place. The staffs are rude and racist. Arrogant.
We have 6 people, and they take us to a table for 5. We kindly asked for adding one chair and was responded “No!” We asked why the rude lady said they have to walk, even though the other table clearly added a chair (German family), we don’t see how it “disturbing their work” One of our people take out a water bottle to sip (yes, a nearly empty water bottle) and the other rude lady literally pointed at her nose said “No! You are not allowed to drink outside drink” I mean we are not aware we can’t since there is no sign, and we are very not comfortable being treated like a criminal. Two of our people left because they being treated rudely and unfairly. We order 3 dishes for 4 people. We kindly asked for one more knife because they only bring 3. Another rude lady (yes, they are different ladies and all of them are terrible) literally yelled at us “No! You ordered 3 dishes, now go eat!” And she left. We were shocked. We never experienced such a service! We asked and tried to reflect the situation to other lady and they decided to play even more arrogant- “No! If you want one more knife, you have to pay 1 euro. You are not children, you need to pay. You are not under 12, right?” “You should told me before you enter the restaurant.” I was like ??? We are fine if they told us in the first place but no, there is not sign, and we are not informed in this place sharing is not allowed. Instead, we are treated rudely and they even tried to humiliate us!
In short, not recommended, the food is terrible (a restaurant like that can’t serve good food), world-class-terrible service, and try to avoid if you are international who don’t speak German and you are student who try to budget and don’t order a table of...
