Babbo bar — Restaurant in Berlin

Unfortunately I’m disappointed and don‘t quite get what others who recommend and love this place have experienced here, because sadly I can‘t see why others love this place so much. More on this in the following but if you want a short explanation for my 2 stars: we paid around 180€ for 3 persons, 2 of us (me included) had to eat at home afterwards because our portions were tiny (we all had first course, main course and dessert) and for an authentic italian restaurant it was sadly on of the badder experiences I have encountered in my culinary years.

But now for the long version. I chose this restaurant because my dad was in town, we love italian food so after reading the extraordinary good reviews and seeing the nice website with a nice menu selection, I wanted to give it a try. (I worked years in restaurants and I am a big foodie, especially for my italian food, so I love to try new stuff, because why not, it‘s berlin right?)

The place: We get there and it is just a brightly lit room with a big window so you can see the whole restaurant. Because the first impression was sadly uninviting (compared to other romantic italian places in berlin) I even had to check if that is the right restaurant because the place looked nothing like the photos, but we were right. The atmosphere and ambiance was just… cold. You walk straight into the dining area with tables scrambled together, bright lights, no candles, no nice tablecloths, just straight up cheap tables and chairs. The chairs are unfortunately also so uncomfortable, that we wanted to go right after eating. For every restaurant, but especially italian, I want to be comfortable. I want to feel at home. I want the feeling I am in Italy right now and I can sit and sit forever and just have nice hour long conversations over a bottle or two of red wine. But all I got from there was just a reaction to stand up and go. I‘m sorry to be so direct but I have no other way to describe it. The most sad part about it: one reason I chose the restaurant was by the way they decorated and printed their menu. (It sounds dumb but after years of trying new restaurants you know when they put in the work for a nice menu, they will do with everything else as well). So I was flabbergasted when the waiter just lay the menu cards down, which were just flipchart boards with a old laminated printed out sheet of paper.

The food: Well the food. As stated above we ended up paying 180€ for 3 persons, which isn’t THAT much for berlin, but everytime I pay that much I get a really overall nice experience from the places. So, as you can imagine, this place was nowhere near that. My girlfriend and I had roman artichokes as starters, my dad had porchetta with radicchio. The artichokes were ok, but they just tasted… bland (i guess?!), my dad described as: „They lack the kick“. The porchetta was fine. For main we had: octopus, ravioli with cod and tagliolini with calamaretti. And now it got disappointing for that price: my dad had the octopus main and he got 2 half arms. Like maybe 100g, if even. It tasted good, a little bit too long cooked on one side, so octopus gets rubbery. But like the size was just a joke. I‘m sorry to be so blunt. This dish was 28€(!). I had the ravioli and also here taste was ok, but they lacked a bit of everything and for about 26€ it was just to small (had like 7 ravioli) and too little kick to it. My gf had the tagliolini, which was surprisingly a huge portion, compared to ours. I just don‘t get their measurements of plating? Well the taste was also good but lacked something and were a bit to bitter. I mean that‘s a dish for normally around 16-18€ and it was also like 26€.

So all in all I want to say that the food was not bad or uneatable. But we paid 180€ which is just not right for what you get. A ok-quality food with lack of passion behind the taste and an unromantic atmosphere where you don’t want to stay hours. So my rating is 2 stars for that the food was ok and the chef was nice, but I‘m sorry. Didn‘t get the vibe and sadly not something to...

"Snubbed at Babbo Bar: Rude Service, Smoke-Filled Room, and Favoritism Over New Guests"

We made a reservation at Babbo Bar, drawn in by it's glowing reviews from a friend. What a mistake that was. The restaurant was barely a tenth full, yet it reeked of stale cigarette smoke. Upon arrival, we were informed we could only sit at the most uncomfortable table in the center because, apparently, the "regulars" which were not event there, dictate the seating arrangement.

Despite having a reservation, we were told we had no say in seating. Meanwhile, other guests, which were not regulars, freely selected their spots with no issue.

When we expressed that this table was unacceptable, the staff member dismissed us with the excuse that those other guests had reservations—dismissing our reservation.

It was clear they were happy to brush us aside in favor of their so-called regulars - which were not even there. I pointed out the poor service in valuing regulars over new customers, but my complaint was met with a smirk as we walked out.

The level of arrogance and favoritism here is appalling.

Babbo Bar clearly doesn’t care about new guests, and judging by this experience, they shouldn’t expect us to return. I heard the food was good but when the front of staff are so rude, one only can taste the bitterness of the stale smoke I smelled when I walked in.

Schlechtes Essen, respektloses, arrogantes und überhebliches Verhalten - und am Ende bedroht mit Polizei! Wenn ich keinen Stern geben könnte, dann würde ich es tun!

Aufgrund von den durchweg guten Bewertungen haben wir gestern einen Tisch reserviert.

Wir sind um 20:15 Ubr erst Mal freundlich empfangen worden und haben nach einiger Verzögerung die Bestellung aufgeben dürfen. Die Getränke kamen schnell, der männliche Kellner war aufmerksam und freundlich, die Speisekarte vielversprechend - vor allem weil es eine glutenfreie Option gab und die Pasta als "selbstgemacht" und als "sehr gut" bewertet wurde. Wir waren gespannt.

Um 21 Uhr waren die Vorspeisen immer noch nicht da. Die gerufene Kellnerin hat mit vollem Mund und kauend zugesichert, in der Küche nachzufragen. Plötzlich erschienen wie von Zauberhand unsere Vorspeisen. Beide waren gut zubereitet und schmackhaft. Durchschnittlich, aber nicht außerordentlich. Es ging wieder Zeit ins Land und gegen 21:45 Uhr haben wir zum zweiten Mal nachfragen müssen, wo unsere Hauptspeisen bleiben. Kurze Zeit später wurde serviert.

Wir hatten Spaghetti Carbonara, Spaghetti Cacio e Pepe und Gnocchi mit simpler Tomatensoße. Nichts kompliziertes. Alle 4 Gerichte waren geschmacklich unterirdisch! Das einzige selbstgemachte waren die Gnocchi. Pasta nicht auf den Punkt gekocht, die Carbonara schmeckten, wie wenn man einen Salzeimer drüber gekippt hätte und das schlimmste waren die Spaghetti cacio e pepe!! Kein Geschmack , nichts! Was bitte ist kompliziert daran, Spaghetti mit Öl, Pfeffer und Käse zu machen? Das Öl hatte null Geschmack, das Salz war wohl in den Carbonara gelandet und vom Pfeffer nix zu schmecken. 2 Mal haben wir die Kellner informiert, dass das Essen nicht schmeckt und wir Salz und Pfeffer erfragen mussten. 15 min später.... Das Essen kalt, kamen Salz und Pfeffer... Aber Mal den Chef aus der Küche zu schicken, um das Essen anzuschauen, war nicht drin. Diese stolzierte durchs rrstauRest und holte sich Schulterklopfer ab anstatt sich um das Essen zu kümmern. Die Gnocchi waren durchschnitt, das beste der Salat.

Mittlerweile war es 22 Uhr durch und wir haben die Rechnung bestellt und ausdrücklich darauf gesagt, dass wir nicht gewillt sind mind. 10 Euro für Spaghetti zu bezahlen, die jedes Kind besser gekocht hätte. Daraufhin kam der Chef endlich aus der Küche und das Drama begann.... Anstatt sich anzuhören, was das Problem ist, wurde er frech, beleidigend und ausfallend. Als ich ihm den Teller unter die nase gehalten habe, um zu kosten, hat er auch noch bestätigt, dass es das nix mit dem zu tun hat, was wir bestellt hatten. Als wir dann sagten, dass wir die Hauptspeisen dann nicht bezahlen werden sagte er: "dann hättet ihr es nicht essen sollen und es sagen sollen! Ihr wollt mich bescheißen!" Nach kurzem hin und her in allen möglichen Sprachen, wollten wir nur noch die Rechnung und raus. Er hingegen kam mit dem Telefon, um die Polizei zu rufen!!

Fazit: 140 euro für 4 Personen für essen, das jeden Italiener_in zu tiefst beleidigt, da hätte ich die Polizei gern gehabt, um den Chef abführen zu lasenl, weil er keine Pasta kochen kann! Wer gutes Essen mit toller selbst gemachter Pasta will, der geht bitte woanders hin!

Antwort auf die Antwort: Wir waren 20:18 spätens da. Es ist mir egal, wie viele Gäste am Abend kommen - die Küche muss das Essen entsprechend kochen und die Anzahl der essen handeln können. Kann sie das nicht, stellt Leute ein oder macht die Küche größer. Auf jeden Fall dürfen Gäste nicht die Leidtragenden sein! Es ist mir egal, ob das Öl Bio oder vom Discounter ist - es muss Geschmack haben. Und das hatte es nicht! Was nützt mir Bio für 20 Euro pro Liter, wenn es nach Wasser schmeckt. Wir haben gesagt, dass wir alles bezahlen außer die Hauptgerichte - wie so schön vorgerchnet, wir sprechen von 40 euro. Und nicht von 140. Zuhören was die Gäste sagen, soll helfen. Ich kann auf so ein Erlebnis auch künftig verzichten, daher kommen wir auch nicht mehr.
