Curry 36 in Berlin-Meringdamm is one of the most famous currywurst stands in the city. The history of Curry 36 dates back to the 1940s when Herta Heuwer, a Berlin snack bar owner, invented the currywurst.
In 1949, Herta Heuwer opened her snack stand in Kantstraße in Berlin-Charlottenburg. One day, in September 1949, she experimented with various spices and sauces to create a new sausage creation. She mixed tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, and other spices, thus creating the sauce for the currywurst. This special sauce gave the currywurst a unique flavor and quickly made it popular.
Herta Heuwer's currywurst quickly spread throughout Berlin and gained cult status. In the following years, more and more currywurst stands opened in the city, and Curry 36 was one of them. Curry 36 was founded in 1980 by Mr. and Mrs. Günther and has since become an institution.
The Curry 36 snack stand is located on Mehringdamm Street in the Kreuzberg district of Berlin. For many years, it has been known for its delicious currywurst and french fries. The sausage is served with Herta Heuwer's famous curry sauce, which offers the perfect balance of sweet, spicy, and tangy flavors. The crispy french fries complement the currywurst perfectly, making it a popular snack for locals and tourists.
Over the years, Curry 36 has built a reputation for quality and taste. The queues in front of the snack stand are often long as people are willing to wait for their currywurst. There are also outdoor seating options, allowing guests to enjoy their currywurst right on the spot.
Curry 36 has gained recognition not only in Berlin but also internationally. It has been praised in various travel guides and magazines as one of the best places for currywurst in Berlin. Many celebrities and tourists make a stop at Curry 36 to try the famous currywurst.

Read moreA very busy street bar for currywurst (curried sausages). This place came highly recommended on Google so I gave it a go. The sausages were large and came with reasonably crispy French fries and plenty of ketchup and mayo. You can ask for no sauce if this is your preference. I arrived at 12:45am and there was a small line with a 10 minute wait. I imagine the wait would be much longer earlier during the day. By 1:30am there was no longer a line. It's good to know that there's a place for late night snack that opens until 5am in Berlin. I understand staff are super busy and they work late but none of them smiled while serving and it almost came across as unfriendly when they got the order wrong for the person in front of me in the line (he told me he thought he was in trouble). You cannot sit down to eat as there are only standing tables. Very well priced - it was 10 euros for 2 currywurst, French fries and a bottle of 330ml coke. I would come back here if I was nearby; however, I much prefer the crispy currywurst at the Wurstbar with seating, no long lines and a gentleman who serves you that smiles every time...
Read moreMake sure you understand: this is fast food. It's not gourmet, it's not Michelin Star. So why do people rave about it then? Because it's delicious anyway! There is always room for something like this.
Here in England we love curry and curry flavoured things, but it's not something we would ever think to put with a sausage like this. Hearing so much about currywurst I just HAD to try it and I investigated to find the absolute best in the city - everybody directed me to Curry 36.
We went to the stand for a nice lunch break during a long day of walking, shopping and sight seeing. It was perfect for a filling pick-me-up.
The flavours work so well together, I think this sort of thing would be really popular over here too if somebody brought it over.
The staff were great and extremely fast - we were eating in mere minutes, if not seconds.
I also enjoyed eating it the way it was intended - at the little stand-up tables!
Definitely go to Curry 36 - I tried other currywurst which, while also very tasty, did not match how good this place was.
I bet it would be perfect after a hard night of...
