Balthasar — Restaurant in Cologne

I visited Balthasar in Cologne with friends who live in Germany and speak the language fluently. As a tourist, I was really looking forward to enjoying a nice evening, but unfortunately, the experience left me disappointed.

We ordered both starters and main courses at around 8:10 PM. The starters didn’t arrive until approximately 8:40 PM, which was already quite slow. However, the real issue was with our main courses. By 9:20 PM, we still hadn’t received them, so we asked the waitress about the delay.

Her response was a series of excuses: that they were busy with outdoor tables and that we were supposed to inform them when to proceed with the main course. This was never communicated to us beforehand, and frankly, made little sense—especially when the table next to us, who ordered well after we did, had already received their food.

When we raised this point, the waitress claimed that the other table hadn’t ordered starters, which again felt like just another excuse rather than a genuine explanation or apology. Worse, she insisted that “this is how things work in Germany”—a comment made in front of my friends who have been living here for over eight years and knew this was not true.

Even after all this, at 9:45 PM, we still hadn't received our food, and no effort was made to apologize or offer any form of compensation. When the food finally came, it was fine, but certainly not worth the two-hour wait and the poor service we endured.

Overall, this was a frustrating and disappointing evening. Good food means little when the service and communication...

Good food. Good wine and my server was EXCELLENT. I don't speak German and made an error while negotiating the German menu. I ordered something different than what I thought I was getting. My fault completely. When it came my server returned shortly to ask if everything was alright - perhaps she noticed I hadn't touched it - and I explained it wasn't what I thought. She explained that I had ordered a different version that was served that way and that it sounded like that's what I wanted. She offered to bring me that, she did and there was no charge. AND she remained extremely pleasant throughout with no attitude whatsoever. It was a great experience. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. In addition the place was extremely busy and I was never neglected...

Vorsicht, absolut enttäuschend und menschlich eine Katastrophe!

Ich habe selten ein Café erlebt, das mich derart negativ überrascht hat, und das liegt nicht etwa am Kaffee, sondern an dem, was einem dort als Service verkauft wird. Das Balthasar Café in Köln mag auf den ersten Blick nett und einladend wirken, doch dieser Eindruck verfliegt in dem Moment, in dem man das Personal erlebt, insbesondere die Damen, die draußen für die Tischreservierungen zuständig sind.

Was hier an Unfreundlichkeit, Arroganz und Respektlosigkeit geboten wird, ist kaum in Worte zu fassen. Man wird nicht etwa begrüßt oder freundlich empfangen, nein, man wird angemeckert, von oben herab behandelt und fühlt sich, als würde man mit seiner bloßen Anwesenheit stören. Höflichkeit? Fehlanzeige. Ein Lächeln? Gibt es nicht. Hilfsbereitschaft? Im Gegenteil, man hat das Gefühl, dass jede Frage, jede Bitte, jedes Wort zu viel ist. Es scheint, als hätte das Personal ein persönliches Interesse daran, Gäste zu vergraulen, anders lässt sich diese abweisende, fast schon aggressive Haltung nicht erklären.

Insbesondere das Team draußen, und ich betone hier insbesondere die Damen, die für die Platzvergabe verantwortlich sind, glänzt durch eine Mischung aus Ignoranz und Gereiztheit, die ihresgleichen sucht. Man wird angeschnauzt, zurechtgewiesen, in einem Tonfall behandelt, der jegliche Form von Gastfreundschaft vermissen lässt. Es wirkt, als wären Freundlichkeit und Service dort ein Fremdwort, oder schlimmer noch, bewusst unerwünscht.

Selbst bei höflicher Nachfrage wird man brüsk abgefertigt. Fragen nach einem Platz werden abgewiegelt oder mit einem genervten Augenrollen quittiert. Man bekommt das Gefühl als wäre man nicht Gast, sondern Störenfried. Und das ist keine Einzelbeobachtung, bei mehreren Besuchen zeigte sich dieses Verhalten konsequent und durchgängig.

Ich frage mich ernsthaft, wie ein Betrieb mit solch einem Benehmen gegenüber zahlenden Gästen überleben kann. Ein Café lebt doch nicht nur von Kaffee und Kuchen, sondern von Atmosphäre, von Herzlichkeit, von Menschen, die es mit Leben füllen. Doch das Balthasar bietet nur eins, Frust. Und zwar ab der ersten Minute.

Fazit: Wer Wert auf Respekt, Gastfreundschaft und einen angenehmen Aufenthalt legt, sollte dieses Café...
