Café Elefant — Restaurant in Cologne

I remember Cafe Elephant from my cologne days over a decade ago. It is in such a nice location that back then I always managed to ignore the bad coffee and enjoy the nice atmosphere. When visiting Köln, for old times sake, I scheduled with a friend to meet there . Because it was a holiday we reserved a table outside in the nice street for 12 o’clock. So far so good.

The menus arrived with many apologies at exactly 12:30! (It’s not a huge place at all... half an hour??) Ok. We decided to enjoy the reunion and forget the little delay.

We ordered one cappuccino with Soja milk and one decaf cappuccino.

About 10 min later the waitress came out to inform us that they don’t have Soja milk but only oat. No problem!

Five more minutes past, we got that coffee but the bad news that they don’t have decaf arrived next.

Ok. So we took another normal one.

In the meantime we tried to order some brunch. “Tried” because we were put off a couple of times thanks to the “busy day” until we got the attention of the waitress.. A big salad, a toast with cheese and a pancake with only sugar for my friends kid.

15 min past, and then the question came: Cheese toast or with meat? - only cheese ..

10 min past, : “so sorry . We don’t have enough lettuce for a salad. Is it enough if we make a small side salad for the toast? We will run out of when we do that anyway...” “ok... no salad..” “Is it ok?” “Do we have a choice” “Not really” “So why do you ask” “Because you might want something else instead” “No thanks, a small side salad in enough”

Another 10 min pass We get the pancake.. full of cinnamon... which the kid doesn’t like and we specifically asked without.. -my super pregnant (9th month) friend goes inside the cafe this time and asks to replace it..

Another 10 min. Her kid is hungry . Goes inside to ask for the food. The toast came. No side salad ! One piece of lettuce stuck inside the toast.. ohhh well... we don’t start another discussion..

5 more min, the right type of pancake came. The kid enjoyed. Finally!

My dog never had a place to drink some water or was not offered any ... for the ones of us who are dog owners.. (but I also didn’t ask.. I had water with)

That concludes our two hours visit .. not one order came out right. And everything took an unbelievable long time to happen.. for a 10 tables cafe it is rather puzzling..

So we enjoyed the location and each other’s company. The waitress was all in all nice. For that I give the two stars.

But really?!

Ps. The coffee is better than a decade ago, but is still super weak and actually not really good.. it’s 2020... come...

Had the flat-white with oat-milk. The coffee used had a very very appropriate ratio of arabica-robusta. Also very importantly it didn't have way too much milk, it had the perfect amount. The flavour was slightly bitter, well rounded and smooth. One of the best flat whites I've had in my life. Then went the next day to have the same drink with some food. Ordered scrambled eggs with toast and butter. The food was affordable, simple, perfectly cooked, well presented and very fresh. The staff was also very very nice and the ambience of the café was also very apt. Really enjoyed my experience. One of the best...

Ganz furchtbare Äußerungen vor Ort und in den Medien zu Kindergästen und generelle Wertschätzung der Kunden somit fragwürdig. Wenn euch die Einrichtung so lieb und heilig ist, stellt sie ins Museum. Ich will nicht angeraunt werden, weil ich auf einem steinalten, unbequemen Stuhl hin und her rutsche, sodass dieser eventuell Schaden nimmt. Vintage und Retro in allen Ehren, so sollte doch der Kunde sich Wohlfühlen können und im Mittelpunkt stehen, nicht das Café oder der Betreiber selbst. Kinder sitzen nunmal nicht still und warten nur darauf, dass man bezahlt und wieder geht. Eine Holzbank ist übrigens keine Chaiselongue ;-) Eine gesamt Kundengruppe so zu verprellen, muss man sich wahrlich leisten können. Uns seht ihr, wie gewünscht, nicht wieder. Wir gehen ins Café um entspannt etwas zu uns zu nehmen, auch mit wohl erzogenen Kindern dabei. Fühlt sich so aber nicht mehr so an, als wäre das hier möglich. Auch der Zusatz man sei Kinderlieb und hätte für gut erzogene Kinder auch babyccino und Malhefte damit sie ruhig sind, lässt mich ratlos zurück, wie man mit dieser Art ein Café führen kann. Nicht empfehlenswert wenn man mit mehr als einer Person unterwegs ist. Vielleicht zum arbeiten bei Ruhe aber mit wenig Umsatz besser geeignet. Fazit: nicht nur die Einrichtung ist altbacken und hat keinen einheitlichen Stil, ebenso sind es die Ansichten zu Erziehung und Kindern des Inhabers. Besonders wenn dieser wiederholt schlechte Bewertungen löschen lässt, bestätigt das nur wie unehrlich der Gastgeber ist. Sich an Medien wenden um über Eltern und Kindergäste herzuziehen ist das eine. Wenn Eltern sich dann in Medien wie Google Mapsbewertungen äußern, wird gesagt es sei unsachlich, irrelevant und muss daher gelöscht werden. Sagt alles über die Inhaber und deren Ansichten...
