The church is located on a late antique burial ground on the northern road of the Roman city. Since the late 4th century emerged several cult buildings at this point. A late antique memorial building was dedicated to a group of late Roman martyrs, whose traditional number grew from eleven to 11000 in the course of the legendary development, and at whose head the British king's daughter Ursula was born. She became the title saint of the church and next to the Three Wise Men and St. Gereon city patroness of Cologne. A noble women's monastery has existed since the 10th century. In the second quarter of the 12th century, the current church was rebuilt as a three-aisled gallery basilica with a long choir and a tower-crowned western building. The Gothic long choir was built in the last quarter of the 13th century. Before 1300, a second aisle was added on the south side, the so-called Marienschiff, which was extensively redesigned in the 15th century. In the 17th century, the interior was baroque and the splendidly furnished golden chamber was set up for the storage and presentation of the unusually rich treasure trove of relics. 1802 abolition of the women's monastery and subsequent demolition of the convent buildings; St. Ursula has been the parish church since 1804. At the beginning of the 19th century the church was in a precarious structural condition. A reconstruction of the Romanesque stock will take place in the second half of the century; at the same time historicizing new furnishing of the interior. Significant destruction during World War II. 1949-1972 reconstruction under the direction of Karl Band. 1999-2004 restoration. St. Ursula has a rich medieval and modern...

A five-minute walk from Cologne Cathedral, the Church of St. Ursula is definitely worth a visit, particularly the Golden Chamber (Goldener Kammer), which is decorated with skeletal remains that were found on the building site and, according to legend, belonged to St. Ursula and 11,000 virgins who were martyred there, two statements that don't stand up to scrutiny particularly well. (For one , when you build a church on the site of a Roman cemetery, you might consider the possibility that the bones were of Romans who had lived in Colognia. And for that matter, even the number of martyred virgins in the legend of St. Ursula was likely inflated by a factor of 1000 due to a misreading of some Latin. Not to mention that there aren't even close to enough bones to make up 11,000 human bodies.) Nevertheless, the church is worth a visit to see the elaborate arrangement of bones and the decorated skulls. (Note: when I visited in March of 2024, it cost €2 per person to enter the...

Just a months before my visit, I watched a documentary about St Ursula. The story touched deep my heart and I was so happy when I knew about her final resting place to be in Cologne, which was already in my plan to visit in my upcoming trip to Germany. This place is not so big compared to the cathedral of Cologne but no words to describe the feeling once you are inside. Even more, when you enter the Golden Chamber, which you must pay 2 Euros. Please keep in mind that the Golden Chamber only opens from 10 am to 12 pm and from 3 to 5 pm. We were there at 2 pm and we decided to return at 3. It was a great joy and thankfulness to be able to make this visit to pray for, to honor, and to be in such a sacred place. I suggest that you read about St Ursula’s history before you visit her sacred place. You will really feel the difference.
