Maria Eetcafe is probably the best bar in Cologne to go to if you want to drink Belgian beers as they have a very good selection. The food is okay, it could be better, but it is a bar. I like the atmosphere as well.
But I can only agree with the other (few) negative reviews here: the blonde with the tattoos is really, really rude. When I was there with my friends, they put a screen on the wall and turned on the TV asking everyone to stop talking and be quiet. They said it is an event that happens once a week. So me and my friends couldn't talk.
So why do people go to a bar for? To watch TV? I have never experienced it in my life that you go to a bar and you cannot talk or that you have to whisper. Want to watch TV? Then stay home. I understand if it is an event, but they could have informed us when we got in.
Meanwhile the blonde with the tattoos (she is probably the owner) was talking loudly with a co-worker. We went to pay and had a slight mistake with our order and she was impatient, rude, acted stressed. Surely she doesn't know how to treat customers. The bar was more than half empty, so it was not a busy day, meaning the waitresses were not in a rush or under any stress.
Me and my friends left thinking "what's her problem?" and "what the hell just happened?"
So I definitely recommend the bar, but if you see the blonde with the tattoos inside, turn...
Read moreAbsolutely my favorite place in Cologne. I could go here every day. Super cozy atmosphere and quirky interior that makes you feel like you're drinking Belgium's finest beers in someone's living room. Of course it's even better to sit outside in the summer. A constantly changing selection of craft and Abbey brews ensure you never get bored. If that isn't your thing they also have good Kölsch on tap or bottled Lager from the Netherlands. Some may find the selection of dutch food limited, but I consider them snacks rather than dinner, and they are tasty. Lastly the staff is super nice and are accommodating both for our frequent group of 10 as well as special requests. If the beer prices seem high to you, well, quality costs. But you can always drink Kölsch which is priced normally for the area...
Read moreI am sorry to give a bad review but I had a bad experience just now. I parked my bike outside and came in for a drink and food, sat down, and was told to move my bike. I was given a vague reason - something about how it was too close to their outside tables (it wasn’t, trust me) and that they pay for that space (Um, ok, and I’m paying to be here...) I asked her politely in German that no one was out there and could I please move it if people come, and she said no. So I went and moved my bike.....by riding away and not giving them my business. It’s a shame that such a small thing could ruin my image of a place I used to like, but bad customer experience in Germany is my ultimate pet peeve (it happens too often here) and I was going to be a paying customer - you don’t treat customers that way...
