Zum Stahl — Restaurant in Freiburg im Breisgau

After a beautiful bike ride along the river with my family, we decided to have lunch at this nicely located restaurant. However, the server was somehow not happy to see us: she told us with a very unfriendly face, that she had no space left - although ca 70% of the tables were unoccupied and there was still more than 1 hour left until closures. And we saw that other guests after us who had no reservation either were seated…. We are not sure what exactly caused this rejection, we were not loud and were wearing clean clothes. Maybe the fact that we were speaking English among each other put her off. We would not recommend to visit this place although it looks nice. A popular restaurant. Outdoor seating in the Biergarten is of course the number one choice. Nonetheless if it's not a sunny day it is quite gloomy with tall trees and a hill just beside. I'm afraid the service, although seemingly fine, is not as attentive as one would expect. We had no one come by after the meals were served to enquire as to their suitability. Later we waited inordinately long to pay, after asking twice. And the menu, in our case, was already out of two items at 1830 in the evening. The dishes are very good but not extraordinary. And it is fairly pricey, but no more I suppose than comparable restaurants (Euro 133 for four people, no starters, only main course, no alcoholic drinks, espresso at the end). a very lovely beer garden in a great setting near the Dreisam river with a wide assortment of things on tap. Perhaps not surprisingly since this place is in Germany, everyone speaks German - so indeed - as always "be ready to flex your German" as one commentator seemed to complain below. We stopped here after a very long hike through the hills along side it over from Freiburg winding around and it was a great place to rest on the way back.
