Nestled in the center of Göttingen, Zum Szültenbürger is an easy stop for anyone exploring the old town on foot. The location is undeniably convenient, and the warm, casual ambiance invites you to take a break and unwind — just don’t expect a fine dining atmosphere. This is not the kind of place that dazzles with luxury or meticulous décor, but rather wins you over with a sense of familiarity and down-to-earth hospitality.
The food quality was quite satisfying, and the prices were reasonable, especially given the central location. The schnitzel (in our case, pork) was flavorful and generously portioned, though it did take nearly 30 minutes to arrive — which felt a bit long, even for a busy evening.
Service was polite and generally well-intentioned, though some finer points were overlooked. For example, when our beers were brought out, the coasters were hastily dropped onto the table as a stack, leaving us to sort them ourselves — a small but telling sign of attention to detail.
Another challenge was the menu, which was exclusively in German. As a non-German speaker, I had to rely on a translation app to understand the dishes, and I noticed a similar struggle at a neighboring table with tourists who clearly weren’t fluent either. A simple English version of the menu could go a long way in making the experience more accessible.
Overall, Zum Szültenbürger offers a solid local meal in a relaxed, welcoming environment — just be ready for a bit of patience and some DIY problem-solving if you’re not familiar with...
Read moreWe visited Göttingen and planed to try this restaurant due to the pretty good reviews. We arrived early and were just about to sit down, the waiter who was putting “Reservation” signs on other tables, came and said that the kitchen would not be open till 5 pm. So we said that we would come back in half an hour, and asked whether we could reserve a table outside. He simply said “no” without giving a reason. We questioned about the Reservation signs on the other tables, he insisted that we could not make a reservation. Then we came back to the restaurant sharply at 17:00, and saw most tables were already reserved. We were a bit upset and asked to see the manager. So he went in and fetched a German manager out. This manager said coldly that there were no more tables outside. They seem to choose who they want the tables to be reserved for. But we compromised and decided to sit inside. Because of the unpleasant conversation with the first waiter, we asked to be served by a different waiter. Then the manager shouted, “We will not serve you, out, tschüss!” We were shocked, and it gave immediate the connection to a photo from the 1930s, when the Germans said “Tschüss!” to Jews. Their rudeness and humiliating manner are not justified. They feel now strong again and forget the time when they were put down. We will not recommend such restaurant, especially for...
Read moreEdit 5 Sept 2025: careful of over-charge. I downgraded the service to 1 star as they trick you on the charge.
I reviewed the receipt the next day, and it appears that the restaurant overcharged the number of beers we drank. We ordered two dishes and two pints of beer. They charged four beers. You must check receipts here. You dont speak german then they trick you in this restaurant. Be very vigilant!!!
Family of three visit for a pint of beer and schnitzel. A great atmosphere and friendly staff. Food is tasty and salty enough for pints of beer. Price is reasonable and portions are hearty. They provided Yager Meister type shots as service at the end. Awesome! I would...
