One of the worst value breakfasts I’ve ever had.
We ordered three breakfasts at €19.50 per person - it consisted of one single plate to be shared between the three of: 3 slices of Gouda-like cheese, 4 slices of Camembert, six slices of salami, six slices of tomato; a ball of Philadelphia cheese; and three slices of smoked ham. 5 slices of bread. Some butter. One jam. This was to be shared between three people. One coffee each included.
No eggs included - we ordered a portion of scrambled eggs separately at a cost of €6.50.
No croissants or danish included - we ordered two croissants at a cost of €6.00.
An additional latte - €5,50.
Two additional cappuccini - €9.00.
A still water - €7.50.
Eye watering prices.
In addition, the woman at the till is completely incompetent and/or has no clue which tables have ordered what food/drink.
The young waitress who served us was the only saving grace of this whole operation - I hope she got the tip I left her (against my...
Read moreThe owner of the place was incredibly rude and horrendous. While I was seated with a friend discussing what to get, she walks by while eating and half yelling in German, "Order at the cashier". After awhile we were in a conversation eating our 2 portions of breakfast menu, which wasn't even that good (to be noted), but out of nowhere, she reaches over across the table to our brochen basket with a look of disgust and took the basket away saying, "You only ordered one, no?" We were both bit confused, and then one of the staff had to tell her that we ordered for two portions. Even if we did order one portion, the brochen would cost no more than a 80 cent. Also, if she thought that we only did order one portion, she could have checked beforehand with her staff. She didn't even apologize for her actions, so I called her over and told her how rude she was. She said sorry, and walks away shaking her head. Never have I in my life experienced...
Read moreHere’s the refined version: It's odd to me that people complain about the very things that define this place! Honestly, if you don't like how it works, you shouldn't go there. This is a local café where regulars know the drill: you order, collect your order, and find a table yourself—wherever you like. That's what gives it its cosy, intimate vibe. Yes, you’ll need to queue for the freshly baked pies straight from the oven, but that’s just how things are run here. These aren't negatives; they're part of its charm. I can’t speak for others, but I’ve always had a good experience with the lady who takes orders. She may seem serious, but she’s always been friendly and chatty with us. I don’t speak German, but she kindly explained how the café works in great English. I visit Hamburg once or twice a year and always make time for this place, at least once or twice per trip. The pies are pure heaven, especially with the optional...
