I’m deeply disappointed to share what can only be described as a racially motivated incident that I experienced during a recent visit to Hannover, Germany. My colleagues and I were in town filming a documentary and, at around 23:40, we decided to take a walk and stop at Brauhaus, a nearby establishment we found on Google Maps.
As we approached the venue, I immediately noticed the doorman giving me an aggressive and unwelcoming look. I chose not to overthink it and proceeded to walk into the building alongside my colleagues. However, as I passed him, he suddenly grabbed me from behind and physically pushed me out, stating, “I decide who goes in.” In the process, my phone fell and the screen cracked.
What struck me most was that several white German patrons were allowed to enter freely without being stopped or questioned. I was the only one targeted and removed. This was my first direct experience of racism in Germany, and I was shocked — though, in hindsight, I had been warned about racial tensions in certain parts of the country, particularly in Lower Saxony and Hannover.
This was not only humiliating but also completely unjustified. I plan to seek legal advice on how to move forward, particularly regarding the video footage my colleagues captured during the incident. I also intend to explore options for raising awareness through local media. No one should be made to feel unwelcome or unsafe because of the color...
Read moreJust landed in Hannover, I was eager to dive into an authentic German dining experience for dinner. With a rumbling stomach and high expectations, I made my way to Brauhaus Ernst August, hoping to find a meal that truly captured the essence of German cuisine.
Upon entering, the welcoming atmosphere immediately put me at ease. I took a seat and was soon greeted by a friendly waiter. When I asked for a recommendation, she didn’t hesitate. “You must try the pork shank,” she said with a warm smile. Despite it not being typical summer fare, I decided to trust her judgment.
As I waited, I sipped on an iced, amazing beer, the perfect antidote to the summer heat. The anticipation built with each refreshing sip, and soon enough, my meal arrived. The sight and aroma of the pork shank were irresistible. Despite the season, I devoured it eagerly, savoring every tender, flavorful bite. It was a feast fit for a king, paired perfectly with the crisp, cold beer.
The food was awesome, hitting all the right notes of traditional German flavor, and the waiter's kindness made the experience even more special. Brauhaus Ernst August had provided exactly what I needed: a hearty welcome to Hannover and a delicious introduction to its...
Read moreVery nice food but the service is as really poor.
We got a young male waiter that seemed very nice at first but his whole facade was to score as many tables as he could before his colleagues which then ended up us not being waiterd as he had way too many tables and while his colleagues was standing not having anything to do.
We ordered more beer during our food that arrived 20 min later after we finished our food, and he never took away our plates, we actually had to take them away ourselves from the table. We wanted dessert but was never asked and had to wait for 10 min to be able to pay. When paying he asked if we wanted to give tips, I asked him “do you think you deserve tips?” He said “yes we work really hard here” and I answered him “no you don’t, you steal tables from your colleagues to earn more tips” I always give tips, even when mediocre, but not to this guy.
But the food was really good. A shame they cannot find...
