The cousine at Makassar is colonial French which is quite evident in the interiors. The vibe feels extremely cozy. service was very good, there is an elegant waitress with a strong French accent who makes you want to order everything on the menu.
As an aperitif, order the Bombay cumquat, it is an excellent cocktail. The same can’t be said for their Old Fashioned, it was a dsaster, from the presentation to the taste. Served in a Jack Daniels glass with a straw, it was the most love-less looking Old Fashioned I have seen in my life.
The food was a bit of a hit and miss:
Octopus salad: octopus had a good consistency but way too many greens and too much of a mayo-cream (not sure what it was exactly) they should have just stuck to olive oil and lemon and not overfilled the bowl with lettuce. Lamb chops: total disappointment, I was hoping they would be similar to the ones at La Petite Maison but the meat was rather fatty and chewy and lacking in flavor Steak: had a bite of my friend’s steak and it was pretty good, it had their famous steak sauce which I must say is absolutely delicious Chicken wings: sweet potato fries were good but chicken was drowning in barbecue sauce Beef tartar: was very good! Only complaint is that the salad on the side ruined it, it was the same annoying style as the one the octopus came with Chicken sate: didn’t taste it, a friend ordered it but was not particularly thrilled Scallops: excellent
In a nutshell, it is a charming venue but I just make sure you order the right dishes. What is nice about Makassar is that all the people work there are in a good mood and attentive. They also have a nice selection of wines. The only thing missing was MUSIC! I love hearing restaurant chatter along with background music, without music the chatter just sounds...
Read moreWe walked into this restaurant after arriving late from the UK. The atmosphere was appealing and we were given a cozy seat in the corner. The service was excellent and the food was delicious. I was celebrating my birthday the next day, and they even brought out a crown and cake while playing a birthday song to my embarrassment. It was lots of fun. Please note - they do not have card payment, so my husband did have to run off and find an ATM. Luckily the owner leant him his bicycle. They gave me a complimentary drink while I waited for him to return! Quite the memory!...

I can confidently say this is one of the best restaurants I've ever had the pleasure...
