Munich Wine Rebels — Local services in Munich

Went here for a wine and cheese tasting and had an amazing time. Well aware that most people come to Munich for beer and not for wine, and yet you don't want to miss this. Arguably the best and the most personal experience you can get. So first thing's first out of 20 something guests, my wife and I were the only ones without (almost) any German, everyone else was from Munich (or close by). Everyone agreed to hold the session in English for us, which I am very grateful for both to our host and to all the other guests. The atmosphere was unlike any other tasting we've been to (and as a WSET diploma student and someone working in the industry I've been to a fair few). This was very informal and a lot of fun, which is I suppose what Wine Rebels are all about. And yes singing was involved at some point during the evening, so I probably don't need to say anything else...I love my beer too, but this would be the highlight of the trip. We tried 5 wines and cheeses in total. The most surprising for me was the Retsina wine from Greece. I actually had no idea this type of wine existed and while it's certainly an acquired taste, it's always fun to discover something new. And actually with a pear infused pecorino - it was, well... actually you should try it and make up your own mind. The absolute highlight for me was the Riesling, which Wine Rebels had a hand in crafting together with their friend winemaker somewhere in Phalz. Unmistakeable petrol on the nose and the colour that gives away time spent in foudre combined with plenty of fruit on the palate and the texture from 9 months of lees contact. Beautiful.  Followed closely by cariñena red we finished the evening with. Can not recommend it highly enough. Hope to be back soon....

„Food & Wine in Giesing – oder: die Pilgerreise der hungrigen Schafherde“

Wenn man eine Food & Wine Tour bucht, erwartet man gutes Essen, nette Gespräche und vielleicht ein Gläschen Wein – nicht aber ein Survival-Training im Straßenverkehr.

Der Guide kam erstmal fast 30 Minuten zu spät. Kein „Es tut mir sehr leid, ich bin die Vertretung“ kein „Stau“, nur ein saloppes „Sorry, aber jetzt bin ich ja da“. Wir standen da wie bestellt und nicht abgeholt – nur eben ohne Wein. Als es dann losging, trotteten wir mit 26 (!) Leuten wie eine Karawane durch Giesing. Persönliche Note? Null. Wir waren mehr eine angetrunkene Schafherde, die über und auf der Hauptstraße getrieben wurden. Mehrere Autos mussten hupen, eins sogar bremsen – vermutlich wollte es sich der Herde anschließen.

Das Essen? Nun ja. „Street Food“ wurde hier sehr wörtlich genommen. Eine Suppe mit einem Riesenraviolo in der Glühwein Glas Tasse – ohne Löffel. Das Ganze wurde dann auch noch stehend vor dem Restaurant verzehrt. Kein Teller, kein Besteck, keine Sitzgelegenheit. Man fühlte sich wie ein Backpacker auf Low-Budget, nur dass man eigentlich richtig gezahlt hat.

Der Guide selbst machte keinen geheimen Hehl daraus, dass er die Tour zum ersten Mal machte und eigentlich lieber in anderen Stadtteilen unterwegs wäre. Da wäre „das Essen auch so viel besser“! Herzlichen Glückwunsch – wir wären auch lieber woanders gewesen! Gespräch mit der Gruppe? Eher selektiv – der Rest stand rum, schaute Löcher in die Luft und wartete auf das nächste kulinarische „Highlight“. Stimmung kam da leider keine auf.

Fazit: Alles zog sich wie ein Kaugummi, wir waren hungriger als vorher und sind schließlich noch in ein Restaurant alleine weitergezogen. Da gab’s wenigstens echtes Essen und echtes Gastro-Feeling ohne Gefährdung durch Straßenverkehr.
