Food here is great, and at a reasonable price. We ordered lots of take out from here during the covid lockdown.
My only gripe is their spice level descriptions and inconsistencies with that. Sometimes we have ordered multiple dishes at "european spicy", sometimes there is no perceptible spiciness at all (I could not distinguish it from "european mild" but the europeans in our group could), and sometimes its solidly spicy (for someone with a western palate, at least). It also varies based on which employee takes your order. There is one guy that will basically fight you if you try to order more than "european spicy", I'm not sure if it's a pride thing ("europeans can't handle more than european spicy" - well I'm not european..). But it is a bit annoying because going from european spicy to sri lankan mild is like going from 0 to 1,000, and I just want something in between! I feel like I'm somehow offending this guy by straying outside the european spice level box he envisions for us and he then tries to teach us a lesson by using a punishing amount of spice.
I think it would really help if they somehow gave numbers to the spice levels. I feel that the levels sometimes progress linearly, sometimes quadratically, sometimes exponentially (depending on the person taking your order, the day, the phase of the moon...). It would be great to figure out the right words to tell them to get the spice level we want. The food is good here, but at some level it was easier to learn how to cook it ourself and control the amount of...
Read moreI visited with friends La Bamboo Sri Lankisches Restaurant in Stuttgart, and it was an absolutely delightful experience. The restaurant has a warm and welcoming ambiance that immediately makes you feel at home. The staff were friendly, attentive, and eager to explain the different Sri Lankan dishes on the menu, which was great for someone wanting to explore authentic flavors.
The highlight of my visit was undoubtedly the Chicken Kothu Roti. It was bursting with flavor and had the perfect balance of spices that truly showcased the richness of Sri Lankan cuisine. The dish was spicy – in the best way possible – with layers of chili, herbs, and curry flavors blending beautifully with the soft, shredded roti and tender chicken pieces. If you enjoy bold, authentic spice levels, this is a must-try!
The portion size was generous, and the fresh ingredients made every bite memorable. Along with the Kothu, we also tried a few side dishes and drinks, all of which complemented the meal perfectly.
Overall, La Bamboo is a gem in Stuttgart for anyone who loves authentic Sri Lankan food. The Chicken Kothu alone is worth the visit – but be prepared for some heat if you’re not used to spicy dishes! Highly recommended for spice lovers and foodies looking for...
Read moreMy normal go-to is the takeout joint around the corner, Laxmy, but we decided to enjoy a dining out experience at La Bamboo, in Stuttgart West, to expand our typical routine.
Sri Lankan & Southern Indian food offer much different flavors and ingredients than most Punjabi Indian restaurants. If you enjoy fish, coconut and more tangy sauces, it’s definitely going to please you.
We stayed with the Sri Lankan Spring rolls (delicious!) and then the Krabben Töpfchen, which was like a rich, turmeric shrimp bisque.
We shared potato dosai (served with lentil crepes) and Devil Shrimp. They asked how spicy we wanted it & we told them to not hold back. After several, repeated warnings, they finally agreed to serve us Sri Lankan spicy, when we told them that we were not German 🤣 The spice was powerful, but really well balanced.
They also had great cocktails and Arrak, a spirit made from fermented palm flower sap.
Very friendly (and adorably concerned) staff, elegant presentation, delicious food. Menu is great for pescatarians, vegetarians & vegans. They do offer meat options, too.
They also offer DoorDash delivery, which is what tempted us to try it.
They speak great...
