Restaurant Zur Forelle — Restaurant in Ulm

We found Zur Forelle restaurant for a family dinner to finish our one day trip to Ulm in Tripadvisor. The experience happened to be one in life time!

To start with we waited for almost half an hour before the service started.

For my little daughter's starter we had a dish that included salmon pancakes roulades and cucumbers filled with trout caviar. The caviar part was just not present on the plate. We had to ask for it and it came later with the next dish.

The next surprise happened when I found a piece of plastic in my fish soup. A tag to open of a seafood plastic container with letters OPEN on it. The waitress got very upset and took the plate urgently away. Though I managed to make a picture first and I attach it to the same review on Tripadvisor. Later the waiter confirmed that it had been the kitchen's fault. Several times we asked for the manager to come and discuss this health and safety issue with us. No one appeared.

After the meal was finished a different waiter brought the bill with just this soup excluded. We insisted that the hospitality demands for some compensation for the unpleasant experience, for example a discount from the bill should be made. The waiter was rude to us and after all she said she will call the boss. We waited for the boss for 20 minutes. We saw a man entering and exiting the restaurant who looked at us very viciously so we guessed that this is the boss. He never bothered to come closer to our table though. We were standing at the table for a while waving he bill and the cash but no one came to us ever again.

After all we decided to leave to attract at least some attention to us as we had a 2 hours car journey to our next destination point ahead of us. We left money on the table together with the bill.

Now the most exciting part comes! When we made 2 steps from our table this man, who happened to be the owner, jumped to us on one side and 2 police officers appeared from the corner. The owner was explaining to policemen that they need to arrest us for we did not want to pay the bill and cheated with the plastic to avoid paying the bill. When we told the full story to the policemen he was very sorry that we had such a shameful experience in their town. After all we left the place shaking hands with the police officer. The owner did not ever said sorry once.

By the way, the food was great and our waitress was good too. That is why we paid the full bill and left the tips.

Be aware of this place: in case there is any issues with kitchen or service you risk to be treated in a very bad way. The owner just does not know how to spell...

The place is very charming - stop to admire not only surroundings, but also door handle, If you plan the dinner, I advise to book as it becomes full. I was lucky to find a table Let's focus on food as that was excellent I chosen not very typical swabish starter - grilled prawns with garlic. Simply perfectly done. Highly recommended Then came biggest surprise - catfish with horseradish sauce. I never thought that one can poach a catfish. But that way is comes delicious, especially with strong-tasting sauce to offset meeting fat (Since then I tried poached catfish at home, chinese way, it works!) Ich kann die positiven Rezessionen nicht bestätigen! 🥲 Wir waren zu dritt, mit einer Altersrange von 50 bis 76 Jahren hier essen und waren sehr enttäuscht! Wer, wie wir, das Lokal seit und vor 50 Jahren kennt und hier sehr gerne gegessen hat, wurde sehr, sehr enttäuscht. Zugegeben: unsere Fehler waren, dass wir keine Forelle genommen haben, sondern Fleisch. Die Filets waren zäh, tot gebraten und das drum herum einfach fad und phantasielos. Ich habe schon lange nicht mehr ein so geschmackloses und liebloses Essen hin gestellt bekommen. Der Preis wäre ok gewesen, wenn der Koch wirklich gut kochen könnte. Am liebsten wäre ich in die Küche und hätte ihm erklärt, wie Geschmack ans Essen kommt und wie man mit Herz, Seele und Geschmack kocht. 🙈 Einen erfreulichen Abschluss gab es dann doch noch. Der Service reagierte souverän auf die Kritik und versprach es in dem Koch weiter zu geben und zu verbessern - wir werden es unangemeldet wieder prüfen! Es gab sogar eine kleine Wiedergutmachung. Drei Espressi waren schnell serviert. Dazu haben wir einen Kaiserschmarren bestellt und bezahlt. Der war wohl von einer Fee, denn der hatte Esprit und Herz - schmeckt einfach super! Danke! Der Service war bemüht, kann aber gerne noch etwas an den Gepflogenheiten feilen. In einer solchen Gaststätte sollte man den Wein und das Wasser eingeschenkt bekommen! Es selbst zu machen hat was von Kantine. Das gehört sich in einer guten Gastronomie so! Oder?

Übrigens: eure Plastikbezüge auf den Stühlen sind schrecklich! Früher war es Stoff! Auf den Kunstlederbezügen schwitzt man einfach grauenhaft!

Liebes Forellenteam! Nehmt euch die Kritik zu Herzen, denn die drei Tische um uns herum haben alle samt, auf meine Nachfrage, die Geschmacklosigkeit bestätigt und zu Salz und Pfeffer gegriffen um es genießbarer zu machen.

Wir kommen wieder, weil wir uns an die gute alten Zeiten gerne erinnern, wo wir früher bis in die Morgenstunden hier gegessen und getrunken haben und schauen, ob das Essen besser wird. Wenn ja, werde ich es hier kund tun und die Rezession...
