We surfed to see where we could have our late lunch in Ulm since it was our first time here, and we decided on this place as our #1 choice. We were not disappointed, and we really enjoyed our experience at this "Pretzel Tavern" overall.
It was such a nice day (I have to mention here we were so ready to be in a warm sunny environment after a seemingly long and dark winter here in Germany), so we opted to sit at an open table in the open-air street dining area (photo). I tell you it was so good to be able to sit in the sun to enjoy our relaxing time and food.
My brezel (namesake for this establishment) was very good. It came out of the kitchen very warm and it had pretty good amount of coarse salt crystals. Of course, it had just the right texture of chewiness.
Schwäbische bratwürst (a.k.a. naked bratwurst) was a little on a bland side (as is often the case with this type [weißwürsts] of bratwürsts tend to be for the lack of spices and herbs), but the gravy it came with was excellent and saved the whole dish. Also, I would've preferred to had my Nürnberger bratwürst grilled a little longer, but they tasted very good nonetheless. Serving was very generous for the money (you'll be the judge from my photos). All the side dishes: bacon-fried potatoes, sauerkraut with bacon pieces (unique) and traditional potato salad were excellent. Of course, when you mix anything with bacon, you know, it has to be good.
Service was prompt. I felt our server was a little abrupt, but she was very efficient. I thought considering Ulm being a part of Schwäbische culinary territory, they did Bavarian sausages pretty well.
Their menu items are very extensive. Of course, some folks were simply enjoying bier und brezel in the afternoon. If you are in Ulm, you want to try this place if you like Bavarian or Schwäbische cuisine...only about five minutes walk from the Ulmer Münster. You can pay with credit card if you prefer...inside at the hotel front desk, otherwise you pay cash at your...
Read moreUnfortunately I have to give a bad review even though the food was great and the service Ok. The bad review is because the restaurant has a policy of not sharing dishes. I ordered a big main course that included a lot of food and was big enough for me and my wife. When ordered I told the waitress that we wanted to share and she didn't say a word but when the order came and I asked for the extra plate the waiter was upset and said it was not possible and that it was a mistake from his colleague for not saying it. At the end, still upset, he gave us a small plate, good for a side dish but not divide the big plate. The thing that bothers me is that this rule is there, according to the waitress, to avoid people ordering just one dish, sharing it and not consuming more but that big dish costs almost double as some other smaller dishes so I don't see the problem. We were four, we all ordered drinks and if we wouldn't have this problem we would have ordered a dessertas well. Sad to see owners setting this bad rules that affect the customer's satisfaction and...
Read moreOur waiter, a young man was nice. The other ladies were plain rude. Dont know why they even work there, they clearly hate people and their job. We ordered a 19€ bottle of house wine, which was very sweet and the Ulm snitzel, the bigger portion for 20€. We told our waiter we were going to share and eat something else after, which we did. We had 2 more dishes, but when we asked for an extra plate we were told chef says no. Ridiculous, so if we ordered 2 smaller dishes for less we would get 2 plates. We should be lucky they gave us our own knives and forks. Can't recommend a place with such bad attitude towards the customer. Food wasn't special enough to tolerate rude unwelcoming attitude, except for our young...
