The Taverna Patsouras is tucked away in the middle of some market buildings and is very different from the other, more touristy restaurants nearby. Despite its dockside location, I didn't see any tables looking over the sea. There were some tables indoors, but the majority were outside the front, under a shady awning covered in plants. The tables nearer the building benefit from ceiling mounted fans that provide some small relief from the heat. The Taverna is a short walk from the shopping street and from the dockside promenade. The waitress was very friendly and was happy for me to add something to my order after she had already brought out my son's plate. The food was unpretentious but tasty, with fresh fish baked in olive oil, baked chicken, a filo pie, baked tomatoes stuffed with rice, moussaka and various vegetables displayed in a canteen style counter. We ordered sea bream, two sea bass and chicken between four of us. My wife also asked if she could have stuffed tomatoes instead of potatoes. The fish was beautifully cooked with garlic and was fresh from the mornings catch. Drinks were reasonably priced and the food options were quite large. The bill was not much and it seemed like you could have any combination of the foods at the same price. We visited at lunchtime on Monday and the Taverna was not busy. There were a few locals from the market, and one family of tourists. Another tourist family stopped but were put off by the counter style presentation...
Read moreMy wife discovered this place when researching Kefalonia and we said we’d try it at some point although hadn’t planned to this evening. We arrived around 8.30pm - on a Monday evening out of season, it was quiet but still a few tables busy outside.
So there is a menu but they quickly come out and tell you what is left and what isn’t. They will also invite you inside to see what is left - this is homemade cooking which is done during the day and then heated to order. When it’s done it’s done!!
We ordered what we thought was sensible but it turned out we ordered too much! No complaints though, it was great and we loved everything.
It’s super relaxed, charming, low-key, friendly … and hearty, tasty food. And the price, wow, talk about value for money.
We had the spicy cheese to start and then had stuffed peppers, giant beans and pasticcio as a main. They were all great.
No doubt we’d happily go there again...
Read moreOne of the best meals we had in Kefalonia! Taverna Patsouras serves exactly what Greek cuisine is all about: slow-cooked, homemade dishes prepared in trays and pots (magerio style), just like every authentic family kitchen in Greece. That’s not “pre-cooked,” that’s tradition – something visitors who only know fast food or microwave meals might not understand.
The moussaka was excellent, the beef in tomato sauce rich and flavorful – nothing like the bottled sauces some people strangely imagine. If someone expects fine dining with saffron, champagne, and sushi on the side, maybe they’re in the wrong country.
Service was warm and genuine, prices very fair (especially compared to what you pay in London for half the quality), and the whole atmosphere truly welcoming. For us, it was a real taste of Greece – highly recommended for anyone who actually appreciates authentic food and not just writing dramatic...
