Visiting Ioannina for the first time, we stayed in an apartment just behind the castle walls. In the evening, as usual, we went out to explore the local tavernas, looking for something close to the fortress but full of life and authentic character. Naturally, being in Greece, we were eager to try traditional Greek cuisine. While strolling along the castle wall near the gate of Saint George, we noticed a place called ΑΡΧΟΝΤΙΚΟ Ψησταριά & Εστιατόριο. At first glance, it looked like a simple grill house by the street - but it turned out to be something far more special. :) We paused to look at the menu, and a kind young woman :))) came over and helped us with our choices. We ordered the grilled sea bream (tsipoura), which was excellent - fresh, perfectly cooked, and full of flavor. The menu also offers grilled sardines and anchovies for seafood lovers. The moussaka, prepared in the local Ioannina style, was a true highlight: rich, aromatic, and comforting. The Archontiko salad was a small culinary surprise - beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. For our teenager, the chicken fillet with fries was simple but very tasty and well-prepared. (sigh)
I personally enjoyed my moussaka with a glass of retsina (Malamatina). Although I usually prefer Vassiliki, this was still a very pleasant pairing. The service throughout the evening was warm, efficient, and never intrusive. The staff seemed to anticipate our needs without being asked.
There are tables outside on the sidewalk, perfect for watching the flow of city life, but the true charm lies inside: two beautifully decorated floors, offering a peaceful, cozy atmosphere away from the street noise.
If I may offer one small suggestion: for a restaurant with such refined cuisine and attentive service, replacing the paper table covers with fabric ones would elevate the dining experience even more and match the overall quality of the place.
Delicious food, heartfelt hospitality, and a truly memorable evening. Thank you! Stone walls, warm dinner- sea bream, moussaka, smiles bloom. Grace hides...

This is my absolute go-to spot whenever I'm in Ioannina, and for good reason. Every dish sings with traditional flavors, but I have to give a special shout-out to a couple of standouts. The Gigantes are, simply put, incredible. They're perfectly cooked, savory, and an absolute must-try. And then there are the meatballs in red sauce – so tender they practically melt in your mouth, bathed in a rich, flavorful sauce that's just divine. If you're looking for an amazing, truly traditional Ioanninan meal with authentic flavors from the Metsovo region, you absolutely cannot miss this place. You'll leave satisfied and planning your...
