My husband and I have just returned from an amazing stay at this hotel which, we learned, has only been open a few months. We had actually only planned to stay for one night but we ended up staying for three. I think this says it all about how much we enjoyed ourselves!
We first saw the Ialna Hotel just before the New Year, on our previous visit to Ioannina. We were walking through the streets inside the castle area during the evening and noticed how beautiful it looked, especially with the added attraction of Christmas lights and decorations. So we made a mental note to find out what it was like inside sometime. Luckily, we weren’t locked down this January, so I was very pleased to find a room available in the hotel for the night of our return from my husband’s annual birthday trip to Tsoumerka.
We were so delighted by the room when we first saw it that we immediately asked if we could stay an extra night. The room was lovely and clean and warm and cosy. It was on the ground floor on the street side with shuttered windows and with decoration, fixtures and fittings inside that were a pleasing combination of ancient and modern in style. There was also an unusual light feature set into the floor at the foot of the bed which reflected the stone structure of the building itself. The bed was heavenly with two pillows each, plus cushions, so we could prop ourselves up nicely in bed to read, as we love to do. Also, there were more than enough drawers, cupboards and hanging space and room to move around in comfortably despite its “boutique” dimensions. The bathroom, with power shower, was all you could ask for. While we were there, we went out for a while during the morning and then looked forward to spending our afternoons indoors just relaxing, reading and enjoying our surroundings.
On the third morning, we were sitting at breakfast and feeling very reluctant to get up to prepare to leave. After a little persuasion from me, my husband agreed that it really wasn’t absolutely necessary to go back home that day, so we hurried off to reception to see if we could stay on. Unfortunately, it wasn’t possible to keep the room we’d been in but we were able to move to another room - well, it was more of a maisonette, actually - so it felt like being in a miniature cottage. It was built n the same style as the other room, but on two levels and had a living area with kitchenette and a very realistic but decorative wood burning stove opposite a large sofa and coffee table downstairs. The bathroom - this time with the addition of hydro- massage jets - was next to the kitchenette. The equally comfortable bed was upstairs in a charming attic-like space, and you could even see the top of a snow-capped mountain through the high window up there. The staircase was specially lit, which was helpful if you wanted to go downstairs in the night. As this room was larger and more elaborate than the first, it cost a little more but we both felt it was well worth the extra to be able to prolong our stay.
In addition, the light and airy breakfast room-cum-lounge was in the courtyard and there was a wide variety of different things to eat. It certainly made a very pleasant start to our days there.
The staff in the hotel were all extremely friendly and helpful and I was very moved when they offered to send me some medicines I had left in the fridge by mistake by courier.
We would have loved to have stayed longer if we could, and it goes without saying that we hope to return there some time in the not-too-distant future.
Finally, we wish the management and staff of this new, little jewel of a hotel great success in the...
