This restaurant was a serious disappointment. I honestly can't understand where all the good ratings are coming from. Do people not care about the quality of the food?
First of all, the waiter was a young girl who spoke awful English... we couldn't understand each other very well. Whenever we said something she didn't understand, she said "ok". Ok what?! You people need to hire someone who can speak English or learn the damn language. This is your job and you're doing it poorly!
Secondly, the food wasn't that fresh. What we had: for starters: the 2 saganaki's on the menu, shrimp and mussels. Both their sauces are similar and I liked them, they had a nice taste of tomatoes and feta cheese. My girlfriend said the shrimps were not ok and tasted like boiled shrimps which were then put in the sauce. I thought the shrimp saganaki was good. The mussels however, they had a strange taste to them. I don't know if that was because they were not fresh or improperly cooked... but I had mussels in many places and never felt that taste. Both me and my girlfriend felt it. we had 2 salads, one of them was the rocket salad which had no rocket in it; it was replaced with spinach, which was not a big issue for us but nobody asked us if that was ok or not. Apart from that, the salad was ok but its dressing was very sweet, most certainly with a lot of sugar in it. I can't remember what the second salad was named, maybe lettuce salad... but it was ok, tasty, only the leaves were not fresh. Some were very degraded and should have been thrown away, not put in the bowl. the main dish was the grilled "fresh" dorada... which I don't know how fresh it was because it wasn't very tasty; it was ok but it tasted much better in other places.
It's true the bill was not a lot but you get what you pay for. Cheap taverna, cheap food.
We will not be...

Now that we have gotten the only good point out of the way, let’s talk about the bad. the food is absolutely substandard. As with every restaurant that has endless amounts of food to pick from, everything seemed to be from a tin or microwaved. If you read the first page of their menu it talks about how much love and history is in their food. The only history behind our food was how it turned in the microwave. I ordered a moussaka and it did not even arrive. At first I thought it was taking longer because it was moussaka. I eventually told them once I realised it wasn’t coming, but said I didn’t want it anymore. (Everyone else had finished eating their meals)
The reply “oh, you don’t want it? Okay” No apology, nothing. If the kitchen is tired from pressing the start button on the microwave, or there is no moussaka left, or they just can’t be bothered, that’s fine. Just tell me it’s not coming. Or maybe they genuinely just made a mistake. Fine, but at least apologise.
Instead, they kept the moussaka on the bill and we had to tell them again that it didn’t come!!!
[I’m adding this edit to respond to the restaurant’s comment]:
Of course I’m going to the say I don’t want the moussaka after it hadn’t come for such a long time and was never going to come. Everyone else with me had already finished eating a while ago.
I said that you kept the moussaka on the bill. We had to ask you to remove it off the bill, even though we had already told you that the moussaka...

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Taverna Gorgona in Plakias, Crete, and it was an unforgettable experience. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with warm hospitality and a charming, cozy atmosphere that perfectly captures the essence of Greek island dining.
The menu offers a wonderful variety of traditional Cretan dishes, all prepared with fresh, local ingredients. We started with a selection of appetizers, including the creamy tzatziki, dakos, and perfectly cooked kalamari, all of which were delightful. For our main course, we opted for moussaka, the lamb with artichokes, and the seafood platter. The lamb was tender and flavorful, slow-cooked to perfection with artichokes, while the seafood was incredibly fresh and beautifully presented.
What truly sets Taverna Gorgona apart is not just the food, but the genuine warmth and friendliness of the staff. Georgina herself made sure to check in on us, sharing stories and making us feel like part of the family. Her passion for her food and her customers shines through in every aspect of the dining experience.
The location is equally enchanting, with a lovely view of the Plakias coastline adding to the overall ambiance. Whether you're looking for a romantic dinner or a family meal, Taverna Gorgona is the perfect choice.
Overall, our visit to Taverna Gorgona was a highlight of our trip to Crete. The delicious food, inviting atmosphere, and exceptional service make it a must-visit for anyone in the Plakias area. Highly...
