Ilios — Restaurant in Municipality of Agios Vasileios

After reading the opinions we decided to visit this restaurant. We honestly don’t understand all the 5 stars. Ok, the owners are very nice and you definitely feel welcomed. However the food is average. We tried the octopus, which supposed to be grilled however the owner said that he doesn’t grill it, as he has its own way of preparing it. So it wasn’t grilled but still nothing special. The pasta with shrimps had a few really nice shrimps, but the rest was just a huge bowl of overcooked pasta with a passata. A gem of a taverna / restaurant. I thought at first it was only aimed at the German tourist. How wrong was I. An excellent choice of food, of original Cretan recipes but with a modern twist.. Fantastic flavours and their offerings are different from the other "sameness of the tourist food' offered by the other tavernas in the village. If you are a "foodie" this is the taverna to visit. Authentic cretan food made with lots of love! The owner picks the most of the vegetables and fruits himself in the hills of Crete (we even went with him to do so!). We went to Ilios multiples times and every time he does deliver great food and drinks. His ice coffee is the best in town, the same goes for his stifado, moussaka, briam and Raki.
