Minoiko Tavernaki — Restaurant in Municipality of Agios Vasileios

The lady from the shop down the road recommend this lovely little taverna and man was I happy I had asked a local for dinner recommendations! We were served some bread with a wonderful tomato and bell pepper dip and some chilled water upon arrival. We ordered the Shrimps in a creamy ouzo sauce as a starter to share, that sauce was so divine it is an absolute must to try! It was so good the plate returned clean to the kitchen. For a main I had the lamb chops and they were beautifully cooked and served with perfect chips. Cool detail is that the chops were served with a nice lemony sauce and some vegetables. If you had lamb chops in Greece before you know most places just whack them on a plate but this was just different and very good! My husband had the Cretan pasta with smoked pork and mushrooms, also wonderfully tasting and amazing. I really cannot understand the amount of positive reviews here. It was the reason I came with my family and boy was I disappointed. First of all the menu is huge making it impossible to be really fresh (or good). And then there is the peculiar composition. We ordered grilled calamari, it came with mushrooms on the side. I had stuffed bifteki, there was cheddar and bacon in there for some reason. We are a Greek family and I have the suspicion that this establishment tries to cater to some notional tourist palate. Lovely place for dinner, cosy but not cramped and the wait staff were very friendly and attentive. We had garlic bread, stuffed vine leaves, vegetarian pasta and chicken salad. All the food was well presented and tasted wondeful. The only thing that was not excellent was the garlic bread - just not as good as others we've had in the area.
