Every year thousands of people flock to Crete for a taste of the nostalgic. We had certainly enjoyed a wide variety of simple, excellent food based on good ingredients and long practiced traditional cooking during our stay.
Cafe Francoise has its own take on this theme. Eschewing the local culture of fresh fish, meat stews and deliciously seasoned vegetable dishes they have revived a culinary tradition of mediocrity I had thought lost with the demise of 1950s British seaside town cafes.
I had the eggs benedict: overcooked poached eggs, reconstituted plastic-bacon, all on top of burger baps. A 'creative' approach to one of the great breakfast dishes. My mother had the breakfast 'francoise'. The yoghurt and honey was reportedly lovely, but it was difficult to spot it behind the prize winning marrow sized croissant. On tasting it was clear that the increase in size had not been matched by taste - dry with only a hint of that buttery richness that makes the croissant such an international favourite.
On the plus side, the freshly squeezed orange juice was very nice (the coffee really wasn't), whilst the quality of the yoghurt is would seem to hold out hope for a decent bowl of muesli. My advice, eat in for breakfast in Almyrida - save your money for Lagos Taberna down the road in the evening which really...
Read moreWe were left waiting for a long time as the hostess (owner) was too busy talking to the British guests instead of taking our order. When she finally came to the table, she rolled her eyes when I was about to place an order. We explained that we were two families and wanted to split the bill. Then she started talking over us and made us feel like this was a problem. It is clear that she prioritizes the British guests over other guests (she appears to be British herself). When we had gone inside to pay, we turned our backs to leave. I glanced over my shoulder. Then the hostess stood there gesticulating with something that should represent a hangarskip knot towards us. We have never experienced such rude treatment. The food did not taste particularly good either. There were two slices of bread with a little cheese and a limp sausage inside "their special toast". I would not have eaten the food if it had not been for the fact that we had been at the beach all day and were very hungry.
It's not often I write reviews about places to eat, but if you're not British or you don't like crappy food with rude and arrogant service, don't go here! The owner should take matters into her own hands. They make their living from happy,...
Read moreWe found this amazing place, after getting food poisoning at our hotel and being to scared to eat there. This was the most wonderful place to eat, and we wished we had found it sooner! The lady who looked after us (I wish I knew her name) was so lovely to speak too. Honestly, I would go back to this place, just to see her. She treats everyone the same, and is just so lovely. The food was incredible, and after having a bad experience at our hotel, and spending my 40th to poorly to get out of bed, it was wonderful to eat somewhere not only in a stunning location , but somewhere I felt I could trust. The food was honestly delicious! Please please go here!! ♥️ Also if you’re vegan/vegetarian there are lots to choose, and also have almond...
