Taverna Averto Cafe — Restaurant in Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands

Corfu city is a treasure trove of hidden gems awaiting discovery by tourists. This afternoon, while wandering the charming streets of Corfu, I stumbled upon Averto Taverna, a small gem nestled in the heart of the city.

This quaint taverna offered a delightful taste of authentic Greek cuisine, precisely what any tourist should seek. The atmosphere exuded traditional Greek charm, complemented by the sweet melodies of Greek music, transporting you to bygone eras.

To my pleasant surprise, the food here was truly exceptional. Traditional Greek dishes never disappoint, and Averto Taverna lived up to that reputation.

However, there was one minor issue that could use improvement: the temperature of the red wine. As a wine enthusiast, I found my glass of red wine served too warm, which might be a trivial concern for some but held significance for me.

The desserts didn't disappoint, making this a really good meal and experience.

We had a lovely lunch at this restaurant in September. We were wandering around trying to find somewhere that looked authentic Greek and not a chain, this restaurant looked perfect. The lady who served us (I am thinking also the owner) was so polite and helpful, they were not quite ready to serve food when we first sat down so we had a cold beer (perfect after wandering the streets of this lovely town all morning ). When we did eat I chose the souvlaki and my partner chose moussaka. The skewers were really tasty (if slightly chewy at parts which is why this was not 10/10 but SO close). The tzatziki however was just amazing and the flat breads light and tasty. The moussaka however was just perfect, the base of soft potatoes and then the meat and cheese sauce, just what I wanted authentic moussaka in Greece to taste like and we were not disappointed. The price was also very reasonable and we were not rushed even though it was obviously a busy lunch period. We were only in Corfu for one day but if it had been longer I am sure we would have found out...

We had the most wonderful dinner at Averto Taverna Café! From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel incredibly welcome. We were a group of four adults plus a baby, and they went out of their way to accommodate all our needs - offering a baby-friendly space and making sure everyone was comfortable throughout the meal.

The service was outstanding – friendly, attentive, and genuinely caring. It felt like being looked after by family. The food was fantastic too – generous portions, beautifully cooked, and full of flavour. We especially appreciated the complimentary traditional drinks at the end of the meal – a lovely, authentic touch that made the evening even more special.
