Kipos Cafe — Restaurant in Municipality of Chania

My husband facing racism here was ridiculous

Today I wanted to show my husband a place I went to as a kid and with my family all the time as an adult .

We sat down and my husband went looking for the bathroom. (My husband is African American) and even though I shouldn’t have to state that here , I have to for the purpose of this review .

I told my husband , the restrooms are inside and downstairs .

He headed towards the restroom where they told him that the bathroom is actually outside . So he comes back and tells me he has to go outside , I didn’t think about it twice ..

Until later my step mom joined us and told us that she’s also going to use the restroom and that it is inside where no one stopped her.

After that we addressed the fact with the manager there and he said “ he didn’t know he was a customer “

??? Okay ?? Fine .. but not fine How do you not know we have a table here…

He proceeded to tell us that he asked my husband if he was a customer and my husband said no allegedly

That’s when we realized he was lying , and I asked him why are you lying he then started to get defensive and never Apologized for sending someone of color to an outside restroom and not letting use the store, once again we sat and had paid for drinks.

We understand perhaps not letting anyone use the restrooms. But he Lied...

Χθες, 23 Ιουλίου 2018, στις 10.30- 11.00 το βράδυ εγινε το εξής: πήγα στο καφέ «κήπος» με τα παιδιά μου για να βρω τη γυναίκα μου και μια παρέα στενού οικογενειακού κύκλου, οι οποίοι κάθονταν ήδη εκεί. Μετά από λίγο, ήρθε η σερβιτόρα, η οποία είχε εξυπηρετήσει το τραπέζι και μας είπε πολύ ευγενικά να πληρώσουμε, το οποίο και κάναμε. Εγώ δε φορούσα μπλούζα από πάνω. Σε λίγο θέλησα να πάω στην τουαλέτα και ρώτησα τη σερβιτόρα να μου πει πού βρίσκεται. Με εξυπηρέτησε πολύ ευγενικά. Στο δρόμο για την τουαλέτα συνάντησα το αφεντικό της καφετέριας, ο οποίος μόλις με είδε, με κοίταξε με ένα υποτιμητικό ύφος, με ρώτησε πού πάω, μου είπε ότι δεν είμαστε στην παραλία, ότι χωρίς μπλούζα από πάνω προσβάλλω το κύρος του καταστήματος, το οποίο είναι οικογενειακό και μου είπε ότι «τέτοιους ανθρώπους δε σερβίρουμε». Έχω του εξήγησα ότι ήδη κάθομαι εκεί με την οικογένεια μου, ήδη έχω σερβιριστεί και ήδη έχω πληρώσει και αυτός έδειξε φανερά έκπληκτος και ενοχλημένος. Στη συνέχεια μάζεψε τους σερβιτόρους και τη σερβιτόρα που μας είχε εξυπηρετήσει, ζητώντας πληροφορίες. Εν τέλει είπε ότι η σερβιτόρα είναι καινούρια και ότι δεν το γνώριζε και μου ζήτησε να φύγουμε, μπροστά στην οικογένειά μου και μπροστά στα παιδιά μου. Η ώρα ήταν 11 το βράδυ και το μαγαζί ήταν άδειο, εκτός από δύο τραπέζια, στα οποία κάθονταν δυο άνθρωποι. Θεωρώ το γεγονός, το ύφος και τη συμπεριφορά του αφεντικού της καφετεριας «κήπος» στα Χανιά απαράδεκτα. Ήταν αγενής και προσβλητικός, όπως επίσης και παράλογος. Το όλο περιστατικό έλαβε χώρα αφού είχαμε πληρώσει και χωρίς να υπάρξει νύξη για αποζημίωση που μας έδιωχνε.

Yesterday, on July 23rd 2018, the following events took place in the cafeteria “Kipos” in Chania, Greece. I went there with my children to find my wife and some close friends, who were already sitting there. After a while, the waitress who had already served the table came and asked us very politely to pay, which we did. I then asked the waitress to show me the toilet, which she very politely did. I didn’t wear a T-shirt. On the way to the toilet, I ran across the boss of the cafeteria, who, as soon as he saw me, looked at me with a very degrading look, asked me where I was heading, told me that we’re not on the beach, that I insult the cafeteria and the people who are sitting there and told me that “we don’t serve such people as you”. I explained to him that I had already been served, that I had been sitting there with my wife, my kids and our friends and that we had already paid. He was genuinely irritated and stunned that I had been served. He then gathered a group of waiters and the waitress who had served us and asked for further details. He then explained to me that the waitress is new and that “she didn’t know” and asked me in front of my family of four children and in front of our friends to leave. It should be noted that the event took place on 11 PM at night, when the cafeteria was almost empty with the exception of two tables with two people at each table. I consider the behavior and the attitude of the boss of the cafeteria to be unacceptable, impolite, rude and...

We stopped there while exploring chania, it was a hot morning so we decided to stay for a drink. There wasn’t many guests, still, the staff took a very long time to notice us. Big plus was they served us cold water for free before they even took our order. After that, it went quite quickly, our drinks were served in a short period of time. Otherwise, the atmosphere wasn’t so good- around the tables, there was a lot of mess laying on the ground. One of the waiters wasn’t very happy to see costumers, as it seemed. He was always mumbling something and when I politely asked him to repeat that or that I didn’t understand, he repeated it, but he looked pretty annoyed by that.
