Excellent. We haven't had a bad meal yet on our summer holiday to Astypalea & Kos. In fact the meals, the restaurants & the hospitable staff just get better.
We had a really nice meal at Istros in the Lambi District of Kos. Again we opted for mains only at Istros with a side of ๐ with garlic butter and tomato ๐ salsa. I had my favourite fish, monkfish Stefano, with onions and a beautiful puree accompanied by lightly roasted quartered baby potatoes ๐ฅ whilst my wife had beef ๐ stifado, again with roasted potatoes, not to be mistaken for chips.
Both cooked beautifully.
Accompanied of course by what is now the almost obligatory carafe of white wine ๐ท.
Service was very good, with all waiting staff wearing masks ๐ท. Toilets were very clean with hand sanitizer plus the usual washing facilities.
Went back for a second time yesterday, early Saturday evening when it was getting busy, but it's so popular that most of the tables were reserved, and I know why. It's GOOD, very good. We had another really tasty and good meal, with the same friendly great service. We started with lemon liver - beautiful and simple dish. Followed by the Greek burger, really nice. Whilst Mrs G had the pork. Another great dish on a bed of apple puree, which was lovely.
We've now worked out that it's soon easy to pick a good restaurant in Greece. Don't eat at any where they're touring for business, menu in hand pavement side, look for how many tables are reserved, some have simple reserved notices on the table others use bottles of wine...it's that simple. Common sense of course.
If you don't want to be disappointed make sure that you book. It's worth it, you'll have a great meal ๐.

The atmosphere and vibe of the restaurant just transports you to a different place. We sat in the garden area and it was so beautiful and peaceful.
The service from the start to the end by the waiters and owner was outstanding. They were very polite, attentive and knowledgeable with all the food and drinks on the menu . If we had a questions, they were able to answer it for us, which for sure helped us decide what to order.
We went for our anniversary dinner and upon arrival was a photo frame with a note from the restaurant wishing us a happy anniversary. It is the fine detail and attention paid to setting up our table that goes to show the passion for service within the restaurant.
The food exceeded all my expectations. After being on the island for years, you do really get over eating traditional Greek food wherever you go. But Istros mixes tradition with modern tastes and brings these dishes to life on a plate. The flavours were subtle but intense.
At one point I told the owner and my husband I felt like a judge on Masterchef; mixing everything on the plate together to immerse myself in all the elements. Thatโs the only way I can describe it; a Masterchef experience.
And if you go, the Hippocrates Medicine cocktail was just yummy; it is...
ย ย ย Read moreIstros, a culinary gem on the Greek Island of Kos, truly redefines the concept of culinary heritage. During my visit to this island, it was the only restaurant I dined at, and it left a lasting impression. Istros presents Greek gastronomy at its finest, showcasing a delightful blend of traditional flavors and innovative twists. What impressed me most was the abundance of vegan options, a rarity in these parts it seems. The flavors were exquisite, and the presentation was a work of art.
The service was excellent, adding to the overall dining experience. The staff's attentiveness and knowledge of the menu elevated the evening. The interior decor was a perfect mix of modern and traditional, but I couldn't resist sitting outside, where purple petals fell gently from the ceiling, creating an absolutely beautiful atmosphere.
I enjoyed a variety of dishes, including the delicious hummus, which, despite being served without any bread, was a delightful starter. The vegan gyros offered a fantastic taste of traditional Greece without the meat, and the bougatsa was another modern twist on a traditional Greek breakfast item, cold, crunchy, and sweet, providing a delightful finish to the meal.
Tourists and locals are fortunate to have such a culinary treasure on the island. I highly recommend a visit to Istros for an unforgettable dining experience that celebrates the rich culinary...
