Taverna Dionysos - Ταβέρνα Dionysos — Restaurant in Municipality of Rethymnon

We stayed across the street/rd @ Hotel Christina & they recommended us this place, always a little dubious of this re back handers etc, but we tried it 1st night nonetheless… Service was very good/friendly & food tasted fresh & osteria style home cooked food, with taste of bbq… at end of meal which was bbq prawns & octopus ( beautiful) Tzatziki to start with pita they served fresh fruit & ouzo complementary, a nice touch. The child cleaned 🧼 tables which was nice & funny as well…

Tonight we came back and what a welcome like one of family, ordered mixed grill and wife octopus again… both delicious and 5 star service… Highly recommend this place…

Just to add to this review, my wife and I ate here a total of 5 times/dinners, all superb…. Lovely bbq’d food, great friendly service and obviously across rd from hotel…. We’ve never eaten in a place more than twice so this review says it...

Can't really understand the 5 star reviews, probably mixed up with reviews from a "Taverna Dionyssos" in the south of Crete by people who didn't choose the location carefully they wanted to rate. The food is probably fried all in the same container, the food was generally extremely oily and lacked other aromas and some of our group even had fish aromas in their Saganaki. Also half a day after my visit I got a diarrhea, which is still ongoing for the second full day now. Doesn't have to be connected to it but maybe worth a mention. Staff was friendly but overwhelmed once 5 other tables filled up with people. This led to quite long waiting times. My tip is looking for restaurants a bit more off....

We spent 8 days in Crete and ate 5 times in this restaurant. The boss is as nice as Cretan people are said to be and his grandson the cutest waiter. Everything is fresh, cooked with love and passion for food and it depicts so in the taste. It's the perfect place to learn back how to love eating and discover Cretan food specialties. The price is unbelievably cheap for the quality of both the service and the food, you can never eat side dish, main dish and drinks for 4 persons for less than 60 euros anywhere else!
