My family and I enjoyed a 7 night stay at the all-inclusive Lutania Beach Hotel recently. As the hotel food can get a little boring we opted to venture outside after the first couple of days, and after a short afternoon of walking around we found the Olive Groves - a small family-run restaurant in the backstreets of Kolymbia.
Our first impression of the restaurant when we walked in was that everything was very traditional and authentic - it didn't seem designed for tourists at all. The seating area was mostly outside, under the shade of several olive and lemon trees, and there was also a small seating area indoors in case the weather was cold or wet. As it was slightly windy and late in the evening we opted to sit outside in their raised terraced seating area, as it had a little bit of shelter and therefore offered the best of both worlds.
The menu was diverse and reasonably priced, the food was fresh and excellently cooked, the cocktails and other drinks were very well prepared and the service was fantastic all round - there really was nothing to fault. They made such an impression on us that we decided to return three days later, and were treated to another excellent night - once again everything was top notch.
The fact that we had such a great experience on both nights was entirely thanks to the professionalism, expertise and charm of our host Julia, who spared no effort in ensuring that our every wish was catered for at all times. While other staff fulfilled their roles excellently she is almost certainly the driving force behind the business on the whole.
If I find myself visiting Rhodes again at any point in the future I will be very tempted to stay in the same location, purely for the chance of visiting them again. If you visit this region any time soon I implore you to make the effort to visit Olive Groves at least once, as it is without doubt a textbook example of...
Read moreI was really looking forward to visiting this taverna during my stay in Rhodes, but unfortunately it turned out to be the worst and strangest dining experience I have ever had. When we arrived, nobody greeted us or even said hello. We were left standing around confused until we were finally seated at a table that was only half cleared.
The chef came over with a bad attitude and took our order in a very unfriendly way. We ordered a mixed starter platter but were only allowed to choose half of the items, which was not clearly explained on the menu. We also ordered a moussaka. The starters arrived and they tasted fine, but then we waited around 50 minutes for the moussaka. Only after asking about it did they finally prepare it. There was no apology at all and the whole experience felt unpleasant and careless.
The only positive part of the evening was one kind waitress who really tried her best, but sadly she could not make up for everything else. Meanwhile, the chef spent the whole night shouting at his family or staff, which was uncomfortable and sad to watch.
Overall, I cannot recommend this place at all. Definitely not worth visiting, especially with such a...
Read moreWhilst staying on the island of Rhodes for the first time me and my girlfriend stumbled across this incredible hidden gem. We were staying at Blue Sea Island and we enjoy going out in the evenings for a meal at different restaurants. I found this family ruined Greek restaurant on google and noticed it wasn’t located on the main strip. We were intrigued to try some authentic Greek food and took the short 10 minutes walk over to the restaurant. We sat on a table under a tree listening to the Greek music and the sound of the crickets. We were served most delicious and authentic Greek food, we absolutely loved it. The waitress is the most caring and passionate woman we met whilst in Greece. I would recommend the Greek plate I was perfect and full of flavour. We actually went back a few nights later and just ordered 5-6 appetisers to share a bit like Greek tapas. The kitchen which you can see from where you sit in the garden and the toilets are both spotlessly clean. Please go and support this local Greek restaurant with very reasonable prices and also leave a tip for the waitress....
