A Hidden Gem in Symi – Cantirimi Traditional Kitchen

While exploring the beautiful island of Symi, I had the pleasure of visiting Cantirimi Traditional Kitchen—a true hidden gem. From the moment I stepped in, everything felt authentic and welcoming.

The food was simply exquisite. Generous portions, fantastic prices, and outstanding flavors. We ordered two small pitas and were pleasantly surprised when a large plate of perfectly baked pitas arrived—crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, all for just two euros!

One of the highlights was a cheese dish wrapped in kantaifi pastry and drizzled with honey—something I had never tasted before, and something I won’t forget. I genuinely wish I could have it again.

The famous Symi shrimps were terrific, and the complimentary large portion of white tarama was not only generous but incredibly tasty. The chef clearly knows what he's doing—every dish reflected skill and love for tradition.

The people were very friendly, and the owner himself was there, making sure each guest was happy. The setting offered cool shade on a very hot day, and the building itself has a unique character, as it used to be a place where fishermen prepared sponges. Even the toilets were spotless.

My only regret is that this wonderful place is so far from home—I don’t know when I’ll have the chance to return. But if you ever find yourself in Symi, Cantirimi Traditional Kitchen is an experience not to be missed.

Το φαγητό ήταν εκπληκτικό. Μεγάλες μερίδες, πολύ καλές τιμές και πεντανόστιμες γεύσεις. Παραγγείλαμε δύο μικρές πίτες και μας έφεραν ένα ολόκληρο πιάτο με καλοψημένες πίτες, τραγανές απ’ έξω και αφράτες μέσα – όλα αυτά μόνο με 2 ευρώ! Εκπληκτικό ένα πιάτο, τυρί τυλιγμένο σε κανταΐφι ψημένο και περιχυμένο με μέλι (επίσης τεράστια μερίδα) – κάτι που δοκίμασα για πρώτη φορά γιατί συνήθως το τυλίγουν σε φύλλο κρούστας , και πραγματικά με ενθουσίασε. Εύχομαι να μπορούσα να το ξαναγευτώ! To γαριδάκι Σύμης ήταν εξαιρετικό , ενώ μια μεγάλη μερίδα λευκής ταραμοσαλάτας ήρθε ως κέρασμα – πεντανόστιμη! Ο σεφ είναι εξαιρετικά ικανός και φαίνεται ότι αγαπά αυτό που κάνει. Το προσωπικό ήταν πολύ φιλικό και εξυπηρετικό, ενώ ο ίδιος ο ιδιοκτήτης ήταν εκεί και φρόντιζε να είναι όλοι οι πελάτες ικανοποιημένοι. Η αυλή προσφέρει ωραία σκιά – ιδανική για τις ζεστές μέρες – και το εσωτερικό του μαγαζιού έχει μοναδική ατμόσφαιρα, αφού το κτίριο χρησιμοποιούνταν παλιά από σφουγγαράδες. Ακόμα και η τουαλέτα ήταν πεντακάθαρη! Το μόνο μου παράπονο είναι πως το εστιατόριο βρίσκεται τόσο μακριά από το σπίτι μου και δεν ξέρω πότε θα μπορέσω να το επισκεφτώ ξανά. Αν βρεθείτε στη Σύμη,...

Best Mousaka on the island, maybe in the whole of The Dodecanese.

I'm a chef and I couldn't fault this delicious Mousaka which was one of the best I've ever had. The Bechamel was like a cloud, puffy and uber light and the crust had the perfect crunch. Aubergines and Potatoes perfectly cooked just with a little bite. There is no greasiness to the dish and it is a mammoth portion.

The guy who runs it is lovely too, always smiling. And she should be, mighty proud 👏

Fantastic establishment with...

My wife and I celebrated our 45th wedding anniversary here and although it was quiet we couldn't have had a better experience. The food was delicious, our waiter was attentive without being overly pushy. The location is just off the main harbour, but in a square which has great views of the Symi houses and hillside.
