I rarely leave reviews but I do this one because we just returned from a second meal at Vesuvio-Bis and it was every bit as good as the exceptional first time, a few nights ago.
The food takes top marks. We had something different to last time and both had the moussaka. You might think moussaka is all the same and this is a basic dish but oh my gosh, they really did it well here.
Instead of the usual potato’s and aubergines it was just aubergines in the layers, so no cheap fillers. The meat layer was thick and plentiful and very very tasty. Then…. Wow… the fluffy soft but perfectly formed thickly airy béchamel layer on the top was awesome.
The taramas salad for starter (aka taramasalata) was NOT the usual pink dyed mayonnaise-like slop that is clearly from a supermarket tub but a proper textured taramas. It was adorned with black roe, and it was delightful, especially with the hot fluffy freshly baked focaccia.
Finally. We gave in and had the tiramisu that we had earlier in the week but rather than share it like last time we had to have one each. We feel like stuffed pigs now, but boy, was it worth it. I have never had tiramisu as good as this and although, when in Greece we try to stick to local food, a second chance at Vesuvio’s tiramisu was not going to evade me. Save some room for it and even if you don’t, order one anyone, but to share and shove it down - you won’t regret it!
The staff need a mention too! They were very welcoming and friendly and made ordering easy. Thank you to you too! Tonight there was a guitar and mandolin duo playing Greek music in the restaurant and it was unobtrusive and lovely, so that is worth looking out for!
Summary: Easily our favourite restaurant in Platanias, so don’t be put off by the fact that they serve pizzas. This is a traditional Taverna with excellent food. However, even though this is Greece, order the Tiramisu as dessert for...
Read moreIf you are hungry and want to try the best thin and delicious pizza, we recommend only this place! We liked this place so much that out of all the restaurants we visited during our week-long stay on the island, we returned there three times and took leftovers home with us. In addition to pizza, we recommend the saganaki shrimp, all types of pasta, and local white wine. And any dishes that include tomatoes (they are grown and harvested on the local island). Don't pass up the tiramisu for dessert. Huge thanks to the service—the very welcoming, friendly, and qualified staff really know their stuff when it comes to cooking, so you can trust their recommendations without hesitation. It's best to make a reservation in advance and arrive a little early to find a parking spot. (There is a bus stop right in front of the...
Read moreSome of the best food in Skiathos! We dined at Vesuvio on two evenings, and the food was absolutely exceptional. The steamed mussels were perfection, served in a bread basket with an incredible sauce. The grilled stuffed calamari was delicious, and the tzatziki was the best we've ever had. The garlic bread was amazing. Their pizzas are excellent, with a nice crust, and the pastas follow authentic recipes—like the carbonara made with guanciale, pecorino romano, and egg yolk. I also tried the Kleftiko, a traditional Greek dish with lamb, feta, and vegetables baked to perfection. The atmosphere was delightful, with two older Greek gentlemen singing traditional songs—not too loud, not too quiet, just right. The service was outstanding, and the people were...
