B and I had tons of fun exploring Xela in Guatemala. On a mission to see all the public murals, we were hungry and decided to take a break for lunch. "How about that place with the rooftop tables overlooking the central park?" B suggested. As usual, I liked the way she was thinking. By that point in our trip, we knew the area well enough to walk straight to it. Friendly people welcomed us in and showed us where the stairs were to get to the roof. We picked a table with a lovely view of the park and settled in to people watch. A young waitress dropped off menus and gave us a minute to make our drink selections. I was interested in trying something local, so I picked a Quetzalteca. The waitress gave me a long list of flavors to choose from. I picked strawberry. Note that we were in Guatemala for Spanish lessons, so we ordered in Spanish. There were other English speakers in the restaurant, but every table had at least one Spanish speaker. I don't know how well you would do if you don't speak Spanish. I expect it would be hard. B ordered jamaica with a shot of vodka. B was not as hungry, so she went for a crepe with nutella and strawberries. We had a long opportunity to people watch while the kitchen prepared our food. A couple was getting married in the park providing a fun show for us. Our food finally arrived to disappoint us. The nachos had a bit of low quality ground beef, canned beans and a generous covering of Kraft cheese. B's crepe was drizzled with Hershey's syrup and a few frozen strawberries. Not ones to waste food, we ate our meal, paid the expensive bill and hurried...
Read moreI visited this place after a long day of adventures in the nearby mountains and towns. The wait time was a little long, but very well worth the tasty food that was served. The appetizers and beverages that filled me up during the wait time were very filling and pleasing to the taste buds. The views of the Quetzaltenango city center and the surrounding areas were awesome. The prices are a bit on the high side, but nothing completely unaffordable.
I STRONGLY recommend this place to anybody in the Quetzaltenango area looking to quench their thirst and kill their hunger, either individually...
