We arrived in Iceland on Sept. 14th from the US. This was the 2nd place we ate. From the time we came in, until the time we left, we were treated like family. During our 8 day stay, I believe we ate and or drank at Olverk 9-10 times.
Laufaye, Elvar and their staff take extreme pride in their establishment. Soprun Sol is by far one of my favorite servers I've met. She is always smiling and quite the conversationalist.
All of Elvars beer had great flavor. My favorite is number four, the festbier. I imagine it's almost out of stock.
The pizza makers are awesome, respectful young men and are hard working. The amount of effort put into this place is incredible.
The pizza is really delicious and a unique take on ingredient combinations. My favorite is the pepperoni, pepper cheese, and hot sauce. Also, Make sure you get the pretzel and the flat bread.
My drink combo is beer, absinthe, and Brenivin.
If you're reading this and choose to go there, make sure you tell them you read Chris and Sveta's review! Making friends in a foreign country, and getting the pulse of the town is always helpful. This is a great place to do just that. I will make my way back to Iceland just to have the company, food and drinks at...
Read moreDon’t go! A complete waste of money. The pizza was terrible, a 2 year old could make a better pizza. And the price you will pay will make you feel you were robbed. Really I am not kidding. I want to help others not make the same mistake I made. I can’t even give this place any credit for ambiance, that too was extremely disappoint. Let me give you details on the two pizzas we order. First of all the crust was paper thin. When I say paper thin, I mean paper thin. You could almost see through it. The sauce, well that I don’t even know how to explain. The best was the toppings. We order one with basil. I literally counted 10 small, yes small, pieces of basil. The other was even better. It has artichoke hearts on it, but what they did to stretch the artichoke was to peal the artichoke leaves apart. Can you believe it?!?!?! It was thinner than the dough. Save your money and go to Bonus and buy some ramen instant noodles and you will be much happier. Don’t make the same...
Read moreIn July 2021 I cycled around Iceland. When I arrived in Hveragerði I headed straight for Ölverk—a geothermal powered pizza place and brewery. The place was rammed but I found a seat at the bar where I read my kindle and patiently waited for a waitress to find their breath. I sampled my way through the entire menu—darks, pales, sours—and polished off a spicy vegetarian pizza. The brewmaster and pizza power couple, Elva and Laufey, opened the doors in 2017. That evening Laufey and I closed down the bar, chatting about how to deal with the unstoppable forces of a new wave of tourism competing for seats with the local fanfare built up over Covid. I was so enthralled by the place, I cheekily asked Laufey if she had a spare hat worn by the kitchen staff. She found and gifted me one covered in a light dusting of flour, with the name “Cheesus” scribbled on the underside of the brim. Thank you Cheesus, and Laufey, for a...
