So this review isnt from an expert on food. Its from a person who loves food, travelling and the islands, yet is usually conservative in his choices of food especially given two kids who are fussy and oriented to specific familiar tastes. So Narra was a whole new type of experience. I would say that for most tourists coming to Havelock, this is something new which wont appeal to everyone, but heres why you should visit it at once.
The whole point of travel is to experience new things outside your comfort zone - you might like them and you might not. But the whole point is that you are experiencing something new in opportunities that might not come again, and definitely not at this price or in these settings.
Narra gives you a whole new set of sensations, but in the world of taste. Whats so cool about it is that you probably wont find this anywhere else in the islands, and you would be hard put to assemble the ecletic set of tastes available here, in any one given setting unless you were at a speciality gourmet restaurant somewhere abroad.
So here goes:
The cocktails and food were all unknown territory - a blend of familiar ingredients and unfamiliar ways of using them - combined to give you something unrecognisable yet with hints reminding you of something or the other. The portions were enough to give you the new tastes in abundance, and the meal taken together was substantial enough to leave us feeling pleasantly full.
The cocktails were wonderfully new combinations of old ingredients with some new twists served in unique ways. The balance of recognising old friendly flavours in new twists and combinations is something that is a whole new set of sensations and a most enjoyable experience.
The food is excellent. What hit me most was a combination of tastes, sometimes contradictory and sometimes complementary, which supplement each other and set off different explosions of taste in your mouth. The beauty of it is that you dont expect them to go together and you dont know what they are supposed to taste like - but when you do put them in your mouth, your taste buds and palate are exposed to a whole new range of flavours that I for one, in 40 years of eating different sorts of cuisines in different places, havent tasted in this avatar.
The desserts were unusual by indian tastes, but in their own way they add to the experience by bringing in even more flavours combined to round up your culinary experience and put the finishing touches on tantalisingly familiar tastes bringing back memories of some long forgotten favourite, while giving you a whole new food trip.
Theres a lot more to be said, but putting it in words is difficult. Let me put it this way...if you are bold enough to try new tastes, and its not just about having a meal, then you have to try this experience.
You may not do it ever again, but rather than going abroad and trying this sort of dining, to do it in the comfortingly familiar atmosphere of wild orchid and on havelock of all places is something irresistible to any traveller to the islands whos willing to spend a bit to give your taste buds the sort of outing and equal sensory enjoyment and experience that you give your eyes and mind when you come to the beauty of the islands. So next time you are on Havelock, take a step away from the safe and known dishes that you and your family know and love, and sit down here to give your taste buds a vacation from the safe and familiar, and venture into the...
Read moreDuring our stay at the Havelock Island, we decided to check out Narra, a bar/restaurant near our hotel, primarily because of its good Google reviews and beach shack vibe. It seemed to be one of the few places that blended the aesthetics of a club and bar, making it an preferred choice for a casual evening drink.
Upon arrival, we were required to remove our footwear at the reception—a reasonable practice considering the sand people might bring in from the beach. We ordered two drinks: I opted for the Guava Leaf Iced Tea, expecting something refreshing and unique, but unfortunately, it fell short of expectations. My husband ordered a Limoncello Sour, but it was nowhere close to the authentic Limoncello we had enjoyed in Italy. To snack on, we tried the Chicken Karaage, which didn’t look very appealing but tasted decent.
The vibe of Narra was okay but didn’t quite live up to the hype from online reviews. While it had an ambience that hinted at a beachside escape, it lacked the energy and atmosphere we were hoping for.
Additionally, the pricing seemed higher than expected, which added to our disappointment. After finishing our drinks, we decided to look for another spot.
Thankfully, my husband suggested we explore further, and we explored the opposite side from Dolphin Hotel, we came across upon Splash Pool Bar by Coral Reef—a hidden gem! With live music, a livelier ambience, and IPL playing on a big screen, it turned out to be exactly what we were looking for, making for a much better experience.
Overall, Narra gets a 2.5 out of 5 stars from us—while it had potential, the drinks, atmosphere, and pricing didn’t quite meet...
Read moreWe went to Narra during our stay in Havelock. The food is great, the atmosphere and music is great also. However, the cocktails are definitely overpriced for 30 ml of Bombay gin (mine was over 10€). Also, they informed us before entering that they accepted credit cards, but upon paying the bill they told us that they didn't accept international cards, so we had to go back to the hotel. When leaving, one of the waiters asked us how our experience was. We told him that the food and atmosphere were great, but that the cocktails were basically mocktails due to the little amount of gin. He told is a friendly manner to come back the next day, where he would give us a discount and modify the cocktail distribution. The next day we came back, he greeted us cheerfully. He did nothing to modify the cocktails and, upon paying, not only didn't give us a discount but charged us for changing in euros at...
