Fortune Chinese Vegetarian Our KLG group unanimously (no voting) agreed to meet at a pure veg Chinese restaurant called Fortune in 7th Block Koramangala this week. It’s a testament to our expectations after reading glowing reviews about this place.
The place is slightly difficult to find. The ground floor of a house is converted to a restaurant with just 5 or 6 tables. It's a 4th generation run place by a Chinese family. It’s a very basic, neat and clean place with a large open kitchen.
We think we had this preconceived notion that non fussy places are highly committed to excellent food. There was just a single gentleman, William who took and served our orders. We were the only ones at the restaurant at 1pm and the kitchen hadnt even opened yet. When we placed our orders, that’s when the chopping started and the wok was lit.
The starters and soups took about 40 minutes to arrive and once they started serving, the dishes came in quick succession. And everything was extremely fresh, non greasy and loaded with veggies. No compromise on quality. The taste, unfortunately, not so much.
The soups were impressive. The vegetable noodle soup had salt and pepper seasonings and was perfect on a cold rainy day. The Tom Yum soup was very good too with a rasam like taste.
The starters included steamed wonton which was very good and spring rolls that were decent. The quality of the tofu was outstanding, and the Kung Po Tofu and the Steamed Tofu were both very enjoyable. The food was generally uninspired from there on. The "Crispy Thai Fried Soya chunks" starter was surprisingly made of besan, deep fried like a pakoda, with zero Thai flavors detected. We could not make out the stuffing either.
On to the main course - the chilli garlic noodles were more like burnt garlic noodles and were the saving grace. The Singapore noodles were left unfinished as was the Fortune Delight mixed vegetables in gravy. The same gravy was served with the "Dragon steamed rice". Liberal use of MSG spoiled it for some of the diners. Everything tasting the same spoiled it for others (there seemed to be a single brownish tangy gravy that was used across the starters and main courses)
Though portion sizes were adequate, pricing was reasonable, we came out feeling dissatisfied with the lack of anything "wow"...
Read moreI had seen this restaurant many times in the last couple of years when I was there on the 27th Main road HSR layout. I found out mostly negative reviews about this restaurant in most of the online platforms. After all these years suddenly this week I visited this restaurant for dinner, and on the contrary I felt that this restaurant should not deserve the negative reviews.
This is a vintage style Chinese restaurant , which has a Chinese traditional ambience, a kind of restaurant which you will see in China town , Kolkata. I spoke to Aunty , the owner of the restaurant , and she explained to me that her father came from China and settled in Kolkata. She was born and brought up in Kolkata and they moved to Bangalore around 20 years back . On the contrary to the reviews , she is very jolly and bright . She explained what dishes we can order and suggested a couple of noodles dishes for my son who generally doesn’t like spicy food. She understands Hindi and speaks broken Hindi which is very difficult to understand . Her Hindi dialect can be very easily perceived as rude behaviour.
This is a purely vegetarian restaurant serving Indian-Chinese food. The menu has a lot of options to choose from. We ordered soup , a starter and noodles . After the order was taken , the food was freshly prepared in the kitchen. It took around 20 mins for them to prepare the food and serve. All the items were delectable and awesome . Its Chinese food( Indian version of Chinese food) at its best !! . All the dishes were prepared with care and they were mildly spiced. The table already had some Chinese accompaniments like soy sauce, chilli vinegar , and a chilli ketchup which acted like appetiser elevator. We ordered whatever was suggested by the owner Aunty ,
The restaurant has a small but clean washroom and also clean hand wash basin . It doesn’t have a dedicated ;parking space, but you can park your vehicle on the adjacent road.
Overall , this is a very good Chinese restaurant , where you will get many kinds of veg Indo-chinese...

Its a trip down to Vintage Chinese Restaurants where you get a cozy and homely vibes. The Restaurant is run by Mr William and his parents and the moment you step inside you feel most welcomed. I visited on a Sunday afternoon with my girlfriend and mistakenly i went up to their residence and i was kindly shown the way to the restaurant which was below.
Mr. William's mother came and took our order and even asked us our preference on the spice level. She was kind enough to answer our questions like "whats you name", "will the gravy be dry" she was very warm.
We ordered Mini Spring Rolls, Kung Po Mushroom , Tofu in Dragon Sauce and Thai Fried Rice. I could say if you are visiting for the first time please try the Mini Spring rolls and Kung Po Mushrooms.
The food here is not the chinese that you ate since childhood where things just get tossed in a mix of tomato chilli and black sauce. Everything here gets prepared fresh and i could see the the powder spices were not something that you use everyday in your kitchen. The rice was perfectly cooked and had this amazing punch of pepper and chillies. Since we are spice lovers the Dragon Sauce tofu was just the right thing for us. The Portion size is adequate and is enough for 2 people to share easily.
The food here has balanced flavour and does not feel heavy even after eating a lot.
Mr. Williams Family was kind enough to let us see and record the entire cooking process and later we had a lot of conversation with Mr. William about China, his monastery, his ancestors, Indo-Chinese culture and what not and boy what a time it was.
Lastly we also bought their home made Green Chilli Sauce which they sell.
In short i know where to go if i have to eat a homely...
