The Worst Dining Experience of My Life – A Warning to the Queer Folks

Never have I ever had such a disturbing dining experience at any restaurant. From the moment we walked into Empire, Koramangala, we could feel an overwhelmingly negative energy. The stares began immediately. As queer people, we are no strangers to being watched or judged in public spaces, but this was different - this was hostile, uncomfortable, and downright unsettling.

The manager and staff made the experience even worse. The waiter was downright creepy, standing near a table and staring at us the entire time. At first, I thought it was because I walked in with a waffle in my hand, but the uncomfortable glances continued long after I had finished eating. And then came the most appalling moment - when my friends were done dining, the manager leaned in and whispered in one of their ears, asking if she "wanted something more." How is this acceptable behavior from restaurant staff?

And if the service wasn’t bad enough, the food was terrible. We ordered biryani, a wrap, and some mint lime juice, and all three were awful. So not only was the atmosphere unwelcoming and the staff creepy, but the food was also subpar.

This is 2025. If you run a restaurant, the least you can do is create a space where all customers feel comfortable. This isn’t about whether a place is explicitly LGBTQ-friendly, it’s about basic decency. If someone is giving you their business, you should treat them with respect, regardless of gender, sexuality, caste, race, or any other identity. Instead, Empire failed spectacularly at the most basic standard of hospitality.
