Great Ambience, Food Misses the Mark at Kampot Pan-Asian Restaurant.

Visiting Kampot, a promising pan-Asian restaurant, was an experience with both highs and lows. The ambience is delightful, offering a serene escape in a convenient location. However, the dining experience revealed a few noteworthy shortcomings.

Upon arrival, a mix-up by the service staff left one of our dishes abandoned on a side table for a good ten minutes. It then became a spectacle as three staff members examined it with the serving spoon before bringing it to us. Such confusion can be off-putting and disrupts the dining experience.

The Chilli Chicken Tangra style failed to impress, suffering from an overwhelming coating of maida and cornflour that masked the flavors. The ramen, though aromatic, was laden with excessive chilli oil, rendering it too acidic and harsh on the palate, causing an unpleasant coughing fit. The tofu was charred. Similarly, the kimchi carried the same acidic punch, overshadowing its potential.

Dim sums were average, nothing to write home about, while the bao could have been much better, missing that signature softness and flavor burst. The Chicken Manchurian was disappointing, with small chunks of chicken lost in an underwhelming gravy, lacking depth and character.

On a positive note, the Hakka Noodle Kolkata style stood out as a highlight. It was flavorful and satisfying, although it would benefit from traditional accompaniments like green chilli sauce to truly capture the essence of the style.

Dessert was a letdown, with our orders having to be changed multiple times due to unavailability, and what eventually arrived was far from satisfactory.

Despite these culinary setbacks, the restaurant manager was receptive to our feedback, which offers hope for improvements. While the ambience is indeed inviting, the inconsistencies in food quality will make it a tough call to...
